January in Punta Cana turns on one date. Thursday 21 January 2027 is the Día de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, and the Ministerio de Trabajo says the holiday "no está sujeto a cambios": it is never moved. The pilgrimage goes to the basilica in Higüey, the municipality Punta Cana belongs to. In 2026 its programme ran from a 5:30am Mass to a 4:30pm procession, and El Día reported many pilgrims dressed in white. INDOMET's normal gives January the year's lowest mean high, 28.5°C, and NOAA's record a sea of about 26.5°C. Pack one look for Higüey and one for the resort.

On 21 January the roads into Higüey turn pedestrian and much of the crowd wears white: a white linen shirt, slate-blue trousers, laced canvas shoes and a cotton shawl for the afternoon procession, then coral at dinner.

The capsule

  1. White cotton shawl
    01
    White cotton shawl

For the afternoon procession and the Mass around it. The 2026 programme set the procession with the image of the Virgin through Higüey's streets at 4:30pm, before a 6:17pm sunset, so the sun is still up. A wide white cotton shawl shades your shoulders in the street and covers them in the basilica, which publishes no dress rule; covered shoulders are the safe choice.

  2. Relaxed White Linen Button-Down
    02
    Relaxed white linen shirt

El Día's 2026 report from Higüey described pilgrims arriving with candles and rosaries, some carrying crosses, and "muchos más vestidos de blanco u otros colores tradicionales": many more in white or other traditional colours. That is a custom the paper reported, not a rule. A relaxed white linen shirt joins it plainly, its sleeves rolled to the elbow for the walk in and down again for a Mass.

  3. Dark slate-blue linen wide-leg trousers with a self tie belt
    03

Covered knees are the safe choice for a Mass, and the 2026 programme began with one at 5:30am, followed by Masses at 6:45am, 10am and noon. Slate-blue linen in a wide leg stays loose on a long walk along streets made pedestrian zones, and the tie belt holds the white shirt tucked in through a 28.5°C afternoon.

  4. Cream Canvas Sneakers
    04
    Cream canvas lace-up sneakers

In 2026 the access roads to the basilica were made pedestrian zones, with Defensa Civil, the Red Cross, police and tourist-assistance units on hand, so you walk the last stretch and then stand for the procession. Laced cream canvas grips and keeps your toes covered in a packed street. Leave them at the hotel at night: Lopesan's dressier code asks for "dress shoes or sandals".

  5. Natural woven straw bucket bag with rope handles and a long tan leather strap
    05
Natural straw bucket bag on a long leather strap

Worn across the body on its long tan leather strap, a woven straw bucket leaves both hands free in a standing crowd and holds water, the folded shawl and your phone. In 2026 El Día described pilgrims camped in tents and vigil spaces around the basilica in the days before the 21st, so expect the crowd to be there before you arrive.

  6. Soft coral scoop-neck bikini
    06
    Soft coral scoop-neck bikini

For the beach days around the holiday. The sea off Punta Cana averages about 26.5°C in January on NOAA's record. Swim only where the flag allows it: on the night of 17 January 2025, three guests of a RIU resort drowned at Arena Gorda after going into the sea while the red flag was flying, RIU said in a statement reported by EFE.

  7. Coral and pink hibiscus-and-palm-print cotton sundress with a sweetheart neckline and a gathered midi skirt
    07
    Coral palm-print cotton sundress

For dinner at the resort. Lopesan Costa Bávaro's dressier code asks women for "dresses, long pants, dress shoes or sandals", and it does not change with the season. A coral and pink palm-and-hibiscus print on a sweetheart bodice and a gathered midi skirt meets it, and the white shawl goes over bare shoulders on a night that falls to 21°C / 70°F.

  8. Natural raffia flat sandals
    08
    Natural raffia flat sandals

Lopesan accepts sandals at its dressier tables, so a flat pair finishes the coral sundress without heels on a sandy path. Two wide straps of woven natural raffia and a buckled tan ankle strap keep them on, and raffia carries the straw of the bucket bag into the evening. On 21 January leave them behind: the walk into Higüey wants laced canvas.

Frequently asked questions

Warm, with the year's lowest mean high. INDOMET's 1991–2020 normal for Punta Cana International Airport (78479) gives January a mean high of 28.5°C and a low of 21.2°C / 70°F, with 84.7mm of rain. INDOMET publishes no rain-day count; the 9 days with 1mm or more are computed from NOAA NCEI's daily record for the airport. The least rain falls in March, 50.4mm. Sunrise moves from 7:06am on 1 January to 7:07am on the 31st, and sunset from 6:08pm to 6:27pm. The sea off Punta Cana averages about 26.5°C in January, on NOAA's OISST record.

For the Altagracia in Higüey: a relaxed white linen shirt, slate-blue linen wide-leg trousers, cream canvas sneakers, a white cotton shawl and a straw bucket bag on a long strap. For the beach and dinner: a soft coral bikini, a coral palm-print sundress and natural raffia flat sandals. That covers a 28.5°C afternoon, a night that falls to 21°C / 70°F, a Mass, a procession on foot and a resort's dressier dinner code.

The Día de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, on Thursday 21 January 2027, honours the figure El Día calls the "Protectora del pueblo dominicano", the protector of the Dominican people, at her basilica in Higüey. The Ministerio de Trabajo says the holiday is a non-working day that is never moved, under Ley 139-97. In 2026 the first Mass was at 5:30am, followed by Masses at 6:45am and 10am, a Solemn Mass attended by President Luis Abinader and another at noon, then the procession with the image of the Virgin through Higüey's streets at 4:30pm. Pilgrims camped around the basilica in the days before, and the access roads became pedestrian zones. The 2027 times are not yet published.

For whales, yes. Humpbacks gather in Samaná Bay, on the northeast coast, not off Punta Cana: the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente opened the 2026 season there and in the Bancos de La Plata y de La Navidad sanctuary on 16 January 2026, and a 2021 report gave the customary season as 15 January to 31 March. Minister Paíno Henríquez called responsible whale watching "una herramienta poderosa de educación ambiental", a powerful tool for teaching about the environment. Book a licensed boat; the Ministry issued 46 permits for 2026. The 2021 protocol kept boats 80 metres from a mother and calf and 50 metres from other whales, with engines never switched off. Ask the operator for the drive time from your resort. Sunset moves from 6:08pm on 1 January to 6:27pm on the 31st.

January is a touch cooler and drier. INDOMET's normal gives it 28.5°C by day and 21.2°C at night, 0.9°C and 0.7°C below December's 29.4°C and 21.9°C, though both print 29°C / 84°F afternoons. Rain falls from 91.3mm to 84.7mm, on about 9 days in each month. The sea cools from about 27.3°C to 26.5°C, and sunset on the 15th moves from 5:59pm to 6:17pm. December's draw is the holiday fortnight and the resorts' dinner codes, which stay the same in January. In 2026 Puntacana Resort greeted 1 January with a New Year's Beach Bash at sunrise. Our December guide covers the codes.

Many wear white. El Día's 2026 report described pilgrims around the basilica "vestidos de blanco u otros colores tradicionales", in white or other traditional colours. It is a custom, not a rule; the basilica publishes no dress code, and covered shoulders and knees are the respectful choice at a Mass. Dominican design has its own school: the Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation, created in 1983, gave rise to CHAVÓN La Escuela de Diseño, "founded in partnership with Parsons School of Design", with fashion among its areas of study. Altos de Chavón itself was designed around 1975 by the set designer Roberto Coppa, and its principal areas were finished in 1979.
