What to Wear in San Juan in January

Pack for the end of a very long Christmas. NOAA's normals for San Juan's airport make January the coolest month by day, 28.4°C, with nights at 71.9°F and 4.07 inches of rain on about 18 days. Discover Puerto Rico dates the season at about 45 days from Thanksgiving, and January closes it in stages. Three Kings Day, 6 January, is a public holiday; the Octavitas start on the 7th; and the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián run from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 January 2027, dates set by the city's own ordinance, which calls the fiestas "el cierre oficial de la época navideña en Puerto Rico", the official close of the Christmas season. The same ordinance sets the rules you walk into: whistles and vuvuzelas are banned "en todo momento", at all times, drones carry a $5,000 fine, amplified music on open-air stages stops at 11pm, and drinks come in cups rather than bottles or cans. It adds up to four days on foot on Old San Juan's cobbles. Dress for the walking first.

   Four days of SanSe means four days standing and walking on Old San Juan's cobbled streets in a crowd, from the Comparsa de los Cabezudos at about 5pm into the night. Closed canvas sneakers with a rubber sole protect your toes from other people's feet and dry by the next evening if a drink goes over them. Navy hides the street.

   Mauve-pink zip camera crossbody

   Hands free in the crowd. A zip-top camera bag worn across the body stays shut and in front of you on a packed Calle San Sebastián, and holds a phone and the card for the festival shuttle, which the ordinance prices at no less than $5 round trip from the Sagrado Corazón train station. Mauve-pink leather lifts the navy and the stripes.

   Red and white striped oversized shirt

   Long sleeves for the afternoon sun and an extra layer when the night drops to 72°F. Worn open over the linen tank by day and buttoned after dark, an oversized cotton shirt does two jobs from one piece of luggage. Red and white stripes suit a street party and stay easy to spot when your group splits up.

   White square-neck linen tank

   The base layer for afternoons at 28.4°C. A square neck and wide straps stay put under the open shirt, linen dries quickly after a shower or a dance, and white goes under every other piece here.

   For the daytime, from Three Kings Day to the first afternoon of SanSe. Soft shorts with an elastic waist keep you cool in a warm crowd, navy goes with the stripes and the sneakers, and a short length stays clear of wet streets after a shower.

   For the evenings and the family days: Three Kings Day on Wednesday 6 January and the Octavitas that follow. Wide linen legs stay cool on a humid 72°F night, a drawstring waist sits comfortably through a long lunch, and cream goes with the striped shirt buttoned over the tank.

   Pale khaki hooded rain jacket

   Rain falls on about 18 days in an average January, most of it light: only about 10 bring a tenth of an inch or more. A hooded jacket beats an umbrella in a festival street with no room to open one, and after dark it doubles as your only layer. Pale khaki stays cool in the sun between showers.

   Wide-brim straw sun hat, black band

   For the afternoons in Old San Juan. The Park Service says the tropical sun there is strong and recommends a hat and sunscreen, and SanSe starts in daylight. A wide straw brim shades your face and neck through an afternoon of walking, and a packable crown survives the suitcase.

What to avoid

• El Portal on 1 or 6 January — closed for New Year's Day and Three Kings Day
