TL;DR

Barcelona in February: 14°C / 57°F afternoons, 5°C / 41°F nights, Llum BCN on 5–7 February 2027 and Santa Eulàlia around Friday the 12th.

Do
  • Camel wool wrap coat, below the knee. In 2026 Llum BCN stayed lit until midnight, long after a 6:10pm sunset
  • Mid-wash denim jacket for the correfoc. The City Council's fire advice asks for cotton that covers the body
  • White cotton shirt under a cobalt cotton crew. Two cotton layers keep you warm with the coat left at the hotel
  • Black straight jeans and black leather lace-up ankle boots. The same advice asks for closed shoes, "calçat tancat"
  • Black cotton bandana, knotted at the neck. It covers the skin the jacket collar leaves bare
  • Tan leather belt bag, worn in front. Mossos d'Esquadra advise carrying bags in front of you in crowds
Don't
  • Open shoes, bare arms or bare legs at the correfoc. The City Council writes that the public interact with fire
  • Dressing for the 14°C / 57°F afternoon at Llum BCN. In 2026 it ran from 7pm to midnight, and the night falls to 5°C / 41°F
  • A backpack on your back in a festival crowd. Mossos d'Esquadra call what sits in its outside pockets easy prey
  • Children in the front rows at the correfoc. The City Council says keep them back and keep hold of their hand

Pack for two weekends outdoors after sunset. AEMET's 1981–2010 table for Barcelona Airport gives February afternoons of 14.3°C and a night that falls to 5.4°C, with rain on about 4 days. On 5–7 February 2027 Llum BCN, the city's light-art festival, fills the streets around the Disseny Hub and Poblenou; in 2026 it opened at 7pm. A week later comes Santa Eulàlia, "Barcelona's winter festival", which ends with a correfoc, a fire run. For fire events the City Council's advice reads "Porta vestuari adient, millor de cotó, que tapi al màxim el cos i calçat tancat" [wear suitable clothing, preferably cotton, covering as much of the body as possible, and closed shoes]. Treat it as your dress code.

Barcelona's February has a weekend of light and a weekend of fire. The first wants a long wool coat. The second wants cotton to the wrist and ankle, and laced boots, because the City Council asks for closed shoes.

The capsule

  1. Camel wool wrap coat, self-tie belt, below the knee
    01
Camel wool wrap coat, self-tie belt, below the knee

Llum BCN fills Poblenou's streets with light installations, and in 2026 they stayed lit until midnight on Friday and Saturday, long after a sunset at about 6:10pm. A wrap coat that falls below the knee keeps your legs warm through hours of walking between them as the night heads toward 5°C / 41°F. On correfoc night it stays at the hotel, since the fire advice names cotton.

  2. Mid-wash denim jacket, buttoned flap pockets
    02
Mid-wash denim jacket, buttoned flap pockets

Denim is cotton, the fabric the City Council's fire advice names for a correfoc, along with clothing that covers as much of you as possible. Button it to the collar and at the cuffs. Mossos d'Esquadra warn that jackets with wide pockets and no fastening are easy work for thieves; both chest pockets on this one close under a buttoned flap.

  3. White cotton shirt, point collar, one chest pocket
    03
White cotton shirt, point collar, one chest pocket

Wear it collar out under the cobalt crew, a second cotton layer for the correfoc, where the City Council asks you to cover as much of the body as possible. On the morning of Friday 12 February it goes under the camel coat at City Hall, where the penó banner goes up on the main balcony at 9:45am. Cotton washes in a hotel sink.

  4. Cobalt cotton crew-neck sweater
    04
    Cobalt cotton crew-neck sweater

A cotton knit keeps you within the City Council's fire advice and still holds warmth through an evening outdoors, on a night that falls to 5°C / 41°F. Wear it over the white shirt with the collar showing, and under the denim jacket. Cobalt is the capsule's one colour against camel, white and black, and it goes from the Cathedral on Friday morning to the correfoc.

  5. Black straight-leg jeans, full length
    05
    Black straight-leg jeans, full length

Cotton denim to the ankle covers your legs, as the City Council's fire advice asks, and a straight leg falls over the boot, so no skin shows between hem and laces. In 2026 the correfoc ran from Plaça Reial along la Rambla and carrer de Ferran to Plaça de Sant Jaume. Black jeans wear through the whole fortnight, from Poblenou to the Gothic Quarter.

  6. Black leather lace-up ankle boots, flat rubber sole
    06
Black leather lace-up ankle boots, flat rubber sole

Closed shoes, "calçat tancat", sit on the City Council's fire list beside cotton. At a correfoc onlookers chase the devils, dodge them and take shelter from their fire, the City Council writes, so laced smooth leather that covers the whole foot and stays on beats a slip-on. A flat rubber sole carries you through 2026's route, about 45 minutes from Plaça Reial.

  7. Black cotton bandana, folded at the neck
    07
Black cotton bandana, folded at the neck

Fold it into a triangle and knot it at the neck, where the denim collar leaves skin bare, for the correfoc that closes Santa Eulàlia. The City Council's advice asks for clothing that covers as much of the body as possible, and cotton is the fabric it names. It packs into the belt bag on Llum BCN nights, and black keeps the cobalt knit the one colour.

  8. Tan leather belt bag, top zip, brass buckle
    08

Mossos d'Esquadra advise "Porteu la vostra bossa de mà davant amb les cremalleres mirant a l'interior" [carry your handbag in front with the zips facing inward], and in crowds, bags in front of you. Buckle the belt bag across your chest, zip toward you, and both hands stay free at the correfoc. It holds the earplugs the City Council's fire advice asks for.

Day to night

Morning

Friday 12 February, the feast day: white cotton shirt · cobalt cotton crew · black straight jeans · black lace-up boots · camel wrap coat belted · tan belt bag across the chest. The penó goes up on City Hall's main balcony at 9:45am. Then the Cathedral: 13 geese in the cloister, by legend one for each year of Eulàlia's life, and her crypt. Wear the same coat to Llum BCN the weekend before.

Evening

Correfoc night: coat at the hotel, denim jacket buttoned over the shirt and cobalt crew, black bandana knotted at the neck, earplugs in the belt bag. In 2026 the Laies left the Palau de la Virreina at 6:30pm on the 12th, and the correfoc left Plaça Reial at 8pm on Saturday 14 February. Wait for it in a wide street, as the City Council advises.

A suggested look — mid-wash denim jacket, cobalt cotton crew-neck sweater, black straight-leg jeans, black leather lace-up ankle boots, black cotton bandana.

What to avoid

  • Open shoes, bare arms or bare legs at the correfoc. The public share the street with fire
  • Wool as your outer layer at the correfoc. The City Council's fire advice names cotton
  • Children in the front rows. The City Council says keep them back and hold their hand
  • A backpack on your back in a crowd. Mossos d'Esquadra say carry bags in front
  • Dressing for 14°C / 57°F at Llum BCN. In 2026 it ran until midnight

Frequently asked questions

Cool and mostly dry. AEMET's 1981–2010 table for Barcelona Aeropuerto gives a February mean of 9.9°C, an average high of 14.3°C and a low of 5.4°C, so afternoons reach 14°C / 57°F and nights fall to 5°C / 41°F. Rain totals 35 mm on about 4 days. The month logs 163 hours of sun but only 4.8 clear days, and AEMET counts 1.2 frost days, 1.2 fog days and almost no snow. Sunrise moves from 8:03am on 1 February to 7:28am on the 28th, and sunset from 6:07pm to 6:40pm, so daylight grows from 10h 04m to 11h 12m.

A camel wool wrap coat, a mid-wash denim jacket, a white cotton shirt, a cobalt cotton crew, black straight jeans, black leather lace-up ankle boots, a black cotton bandana and a tan leather belt bag. The coat covers the Llum BCN nights and the feast-day morning at City Hall and the Cathedral, with afternoons at 14°C / 57°F and nights that fall to 5°C / 41°F. The cotton layers, closed boots and bandana follow the City Council's advice for fire events, for the correfoc that closes Santa Eulàlia. Add earplugs, which the same advice asks for.

The feast day is Friday 12 February 2027, and the City Council holds the festival around it; the 2027 programme is not out yet. In 2026 it ran Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 February: the penó went up on City Hall at 9:45am on the 12th, the Laies walked that evening, and the correfoc left Plaça Reial at 8pm on Saturday 14 February for Plaça de Sant Jaume. The City Council writes that the correfoc "developed spontaneously in Barcelona during the La Mercè festival in 1978", and that in it "the public interact with fire and devils". For fire events it asks for cotton that covers as much of the body as possible, closed shoes, eye protection and earplugs. Wear the denim jacket buttoned over cotton layers, full-length jeans, laced boots and a cotton bandana, and wait in a wide street.

The first half, if you want both weekends. Llum BCN runs Friday 5 to Sunday 7 February 2027, and Santa Eulàlia follows around Friday the 12th. Carnival spans the gap: it runs from Dijous Gras to Ash Wednesday, Thursday 4 to Wednesday 10 February 2027, with the king's arrival on the passeig del Born, Saturday parades in the neighbourhoods and the burial of the sardine on Ash Wednesday. The City Council traces the city's first record of Carnival to "una disposició del Consell de Cent del 1333 que prohibia el llançament de taronges" [a 1333 order of the Consell de Cent banning the throwing of oranges]. Late February brings more light, with sunset at 6:40pm by the 28th. No day in February 2027 is a public holiday in Catalonia.

A little milder, with more hours of sun and fewer clear days. AEMET's airport table gives February a mean of 9.9°C, a high of 14.3°C and a low of 5.4°C, against January's 9.2°C, 13.6°C and 4.7°C, so both months print 14°C / 57°F by day and 5°C / 41°F at night, and January is colder at every measure. February brings 35 mm of rain against 37 mm, on about 4 wet days in each, and 163 hours of sun against 151, but 4.8 clear days against 7.5. By mid-month you have about an hour more daylight. January's day out is the 45th Gran Festa de la Calçotada in Valls on Sunday 31 January 2027, and our January guide packs a navy pea coat and lug-sole brogues for it; February swaps them for a camel wrap coat and cotton for two weekends after dark.

For the fire, what the City Council asks of everyone: cotton that covers the body, and closed shoes. The festival's figures carry its history. The giantess Laia began as "a drawing by Carme Solé for the programme and poster of the 1997 Santa Eulalia festival", was built by the image-maker Xavier Jansana and first came out on 12 February 1998. The Cathedral keeps thirteen geese in its cloister, "tantes com, segons la llegenda, anys tenia Santa Eulàlia" [as many as, by legend, the years Santa Eulàlia had lived], documented there since the 16th century, and her Gothic tomb in the crypt was inaugurated in 1339. The City Council calls the festival "a small and intimate party", so dress for a neighbourhood night out in the old town.
