TL;DR

Rome in February: 13°C / 55°F afternoons, 4°C / 39°F nights, about 9 wet days, and Lent opening on the Aventine on Wednesday 10 February 2027.

Do
  • Charcoal wool overcoat, below the knee — warm for the hour outdoors on the Aventine, with sunset at about 5:35pm on Ash Wednesday
  • Ivory merino roll-neck — long sleeves and a high neck meet St Peter's rule that shoulders be covered
  • Black bias-cut midi skirt — St Peter's asks women for skirts below the knee or trousers
  • Black leather knee boots — the hem meets the boot, so no leg shows on a night that falls to 4°C / 39°F
  • Burgundy wool beret — the Vatican Museums do not permit hats, and a beret folds into a pocket at the door
  • Black telescopic umbrella — the Museums send non-telescopic umbrellas to the cloakroom, and rain falls on about 9 days
Don't
  • A hat past the Vatican Museums door — hats share the not-permitted list with sleeveless tops and miniskirts
  • A sleeveless or low-cut top under the coat — once the coat opens indoors, St Peter's and the Museums turn it away
  • A miniskirt over thick tights — the Museums do not permit miniskirts, however warm the tights
  • A rucksack on a day that ends at St Peter's — the Museums check rucksacks into the cloakroom and ask you not to leave baggage there if you go on to the Basilica

Dress for an afternoon outdoors that ends in a church. NOAA's record for Ciampino puts February at 13.0°C by day and 3.8°C at night, with rain on about 9 days, and on Ash Wednesday, 10 February 2027, the sun sets at about 5:35pm. In 2026 the Lent rite on the Aventine began at 4:30pm, so the light goes while you are outside. For the basilicas, the published rules are the Vatican's: St Peter's says "Shoulders and knees must be covered", and the Vatican Museums add that "Sleeveless and / or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted." Pack a long coat, sleeves, a hem below the knee and a hat that comes off.

Lent in Rome opens with a walk between two churches on the Aventine in the last hour of daylight. Dress for the hour outside, then for the basilica: sleeves, a hem below the knee, and a hat in your pocket.

The capsule

  1. Charcoal wool overcoat, single-breasted, below the knee

Dress for the hour you spend outside. In 2026 the Ash Wednesday rite began at Sant'Anselmo at 4:30pm, and on 10 February 2027 the sun sets at about 5:35pm, with the night falling toward 4°C / 39°F. A charcoal overcoat cut straight to mid-calf covers you on the Aventine, closes with three buttons over the skirt, and keeps a sober line for a penitential rite.

  2. Ivory fine merino roll-neck
    02

Plan for the moment the coat opens indoors. St Peter's asks for covered shoulders, and the Vatican Museums list "Sleeveless and / or low-cut garments" among the clothes they do not permit. Long sleeves and a folded roll collar answer both rules, warm your neck on the Aventine as the light goes, and ivory lifts a capsule of charcoal, black and burgundy.

  3. Black bias-cut midi skirt, mid-calf
    03
    Black bias-cut midi skirt, mid-calf

St Peter's dress code reads "gonne sotto il ginocchio o pantaloni per le donne" [skirts below the knee or trousers for women], and the Vatican Museums do not permit miniskirts. A black bias-cut skirt that falls to mid-calf clears both rules with room to spare and swings easily on foot. Its hem falls past the top of a knee boot, so no leg shows at dusk.

  4. Black leather knee boots, low block heel
    04
Black leather knee boots, low block heel

Pair a midi skirt with a boot that meets its hem. On NOAA's Ciampino record February nights fall to 3.8°C, with frost on about 6 of them, and knee-high black leather closes the gap between hem and ankle without relying on tights. A low block heel and a thin rubber sole carry you through a Vatican morning and an afternoon on foot on the Aventine.

  5. Burgundy wool beret
    05

Choose a hat you can pocket. The Vatican Museums' clothing rule, which names St Peter's Basilica too, lists hats as not permitted, so a stiff brim becomes something to carry. A soft burgundy wool beret warms your head outdoors as the evening cools and folds flat into a coat pocket at the door. Antica Cappelleria Troncarelli, Roman hatters "dal 1857", lists women's berets in its shop.

  6. Small black leather zip crossbody
    06

Carry less on a Vatican day. The Museums send rucksacks and any bag staff judge too large to the cloakroom, and remind visitors who continue to St Peter's "not to leave their baggage in the Vatican Museums". A small black zip-top crossbody stays with you from one to the other, holds cards, a phone and the folded umbrella, and sits flat under an open coat.

  7. Burgundy leather gloves, wool-lined

Your hands spend the end of the afternoon outdoors. If the 2027 rite keeps 2026's 4:30pm start, it begins about an hour before a sunset at about 5:35pm, and the air keeps cooling toward a night of 4°C / 39°F. Lined burgundy leather gloves keep your fingers warm on the Aventine, slip into a coat pocket indoors, and match the beret.

  8. Black compact telescopic umbrella
    08
    Black compact telescopic umbrella

Rain falls on about 9 February days at Ciampino, and the Vatican Museums require "Medium and large umbrellas (or standard non-telescopic umbrellas)" to be left in the cloakroom. A compact telescopic umbrella folds short enough to stay in the crossbody through the galleries and on to St Peter's, and plain black keeps quiet beside a charcoal coat on the Aventine.

Day to night

Morning

Ivory roll-neck · black bias-cut midi skirt · black knee boots · charcoal overcoat buttoned · burgundy beret and gloves · black crossbody with the umbrella inside. The Vatican Museums, open from 8am Monday to Saturday: beret and gloves into a pocket at the door, then on to St Peter's with the bag still on your shoulder.

Evening

Ash Wednesday, 10 February: same layers · coat open over the roll-neck, buttoned as the light goes · beret on · gloves on. The Aventine from about 4:30pm, the hour the 2026 rite began with prayer at Sant'Anselmo, then the procession to Santa Sabina and Mass with ashes inside; sunset at about 5:35pm, and a night that falls to 4°C / 39°F.

What to avoid

  • A hat inside the Vatican Museums — hats are on the clothing rule's not-permitted list
  • A sleeveless or low-cut top under the coat — St Peter's and the Museums turn both away
  • A miniskirt, even over tights — the Museums do not permit miniskirts
  • A rucksack on a Museums-then-St Peter's day — it goes to the cloakroom, and you are asked not to leave baggage there if you continue to the Basilica
  • A long umbrella — medium, large and non-telescopic umbrellas must be left in the cloakroom

Frequently asked questions

Cool and often bright, with longer evenings. NOAA NCEI's records for Roma Ciampino, the airport 15 km southeast of the centre that the Aeronautica Militare operates, average 30 Februaries at 13.0°C / 55°F by day and 3.8°C / 39°F at night. About 68 mm of rain falls on about 9 days, frost settles on about 6 nights, and the Aeronautica Militare's own 30-year sheet for the station gives 171.9 hours of sun. Ciampino runs colder at night than the historic centre. Sunrise moves from 7:23am on 1 February to 6:47am on the 28th, and sunset from 5:24pm to 5:58pm, with 10h 35m of daylight on the 15th.

A charcoal wool overcoat that falls below the knee, an ivory merino roll-neck, a black bias-cut midi skirt, black leather knee boots, a burgundy wool beret, lined burgundy leather gloves, a small black leather crossbody and a compact telescopic umbrella. That covers an afternoon outdoors at 13°C / 55°F, an evening heading toward a night of 4°C / 39°F, and the dress rules at St Peter's and the Vatican Museums, where shoulders and knees must be covered and hats are not permitted. If you prefer trousers, St Peter's dress code accepts them for women; choose a full-length wool pair.

Ash Wednesday, the day Lent begins, falls on Wednesday 10 February 2027. In 2026 the Holy See Press Office described "una celebrazione nella forma delle «Stazioni» romane" [a celebration in the form of the Roman ‘Stations’] on the Aventine: prayer in the church of Sant'Anselmo at 4:30pm, a penitential procession to the Basilica of Santa Sabina, then Mass with the blessing and imposition of ashes, at which Pope Leo XIV presided. Cardinals, bishops, the Benedictine monks of Sant'Anselmo, the Dominican fathers of Santa Sabina and some of the faithful walked in the procession. The 2027 papal calendar is not yet published, so neither the Pope's presence nor the times are confirmed, and no ticket rule for the rite is published. The Prefecture of the Papal Household states that tickets for the Holy Father's liturgical celebrations "are always free of charge". Dress for an hour outdoors as the sun sets at about 5:35pm, then a basilica: a long coat, sleeves, a hem below the knee and a hat that comes off.

Early February for the start of Lent, late February for longer evenings. Ash Wednesday, 10 February, closes Carnival, though Rome's own Carnival is history: Turismo Roma, the city's tourism site, calls it "una ricorrenza annuale, oggi scomparsa" [an annual festival, vanished today], a festival once run with horse races on Via del Corso. Three days later, on Saturday 13 February, Italy play Ireland in the Six Nations at the Stadio Olimpico, kick-off 3:10pm Rome time by Six Nations Rugby's fixture list, with sunset at about 5:40pm. By the end of the month sunset reaches 5:58pm, more than half an hour later than on the 1st.

January, by day and by night. On NOAA's Ciampino record January averages 11.9°C and 3.5°C against February's 13.0°C and 3.8°C, and has slightly more frost nights, 6.1 against 5.6. The rain is about the same: 69.6 mm on 9.0 days in January, 68.1 mm on 9.4 in February. February is brighter, with 171.9 hours of sun on the Aeronautica Militare's sheet against January's 155.9, and about an hour more daylight by mid-month. Both months open and close with a free museum day. The Ministero della Cultura's state museums and archaeological parks are free on the first Sunday, 3 January and 7 February in 2027, and the Vatican Museums on the last Sunday, 31 January and 28 February, from 9am to 2pm with final entry at 12:30pm.

For church, what St Peter's asks of everyone: "Respectful behaviour and clothing appropriate for a place of worship are required." For the street, wool, leather and a hat, and Rome still has a hatter for that: Antica Cappelleria Troncarelli, "dal 1857" [since 1857], at Via della Cuccagna 15 by Piazza Navona, whose shop lists felt hats, cloches and women's berets. February once meant dressing up. Turismo Roma traces Rome's masks Rugantino and Meo Patacca, and the festa of the Moccoletti, to the old Carnival, along with the horse races on Via del Corso.
