TL;DR

Florence in January: 11°C / 52°F days, 2°C / 36°F nights, about 11 frost nights, and Pitti Uomo week from 12 to 15 January.

Do
  • Long navy wool coat, single-breasted. It covers a frosty 7:47 sunrise and still looks right at dinner
  • Burgundy merino turtleneck. It covers the neck at 2°C / 36°F and is fine enough to keep on at a heated dinner
  • Slate-navy tailored trousers. The fair closes at 6pm, after dark, and the same pair carries you into dinner
  • Oxblood loafers with a rubber tread. Rain falls on about 9 days, and the streets are stone
  • Lined oxblood leather gloves. January is Peretola's frostiest month, with about 11 nights at 0°C or lower
  • A small oxblood zip-top bag. The UK Foreign Office warns about crowds at main train stations, and Santa Maria Novella is the fair's main station
Don't
  • Waiting outside the Fortezza for the street style. Pitti's own history puts the parades in the Fort's squares, behind the ticket check
  • Expecting to buy a visitor's ticket at the gate. Pitti does not admit fashion fans or end customers
  • A smooth dress sole. It slides on stone on the 9 or so wet days
  • Full-price shopping in the first days of January. Tuscany's sales start on the first working day before Epiphany

Pack for frost and for a city with a trade fair in it. NOAA NCEI's record for Peretola gives January 11.2°C / 52°F by day and 2.2°C / 36°F at night, with frost on about 11 nights, the most of the year, and rain on about 9 days. Pitti Uomo 111 runs 12 to 15 January 2027 at the Fortezza da Basso, and it is trade only. It still reaches the rest of Florence: after the January 2026 edition, Pitti's chief executive Raffaello Napoleone said "the many special events enlivened the city". So pack one outfit that works at a frosty 9am, on a busy platform at Santa Maria Novella and at dinner the same night.

Pitti Uomo is trade only, but it does not stay inside the Fortezza. Nearly 19,000 visitors came for the January 2026 edition, and for four days they share the station, the pavements and the dinner hour with you, in the frostiest month of the year.

The capsule

  1. long navy single-breasted wool coat with notch lapels and three buttons
    01
Long navy wool coat, single-breasted, notch lapel

Pitti opens at 9am, about an hour and a quarter after a 7:47 sunrise, in Peretola's frostiest month, with about 11 frost nights. A long single-breasted wool coat covers you from the station to the gate and on to dinner. With a trade ticket, check it at the free cloakroom Pitti lists inside the fair instead of carrying it round the stands.

  2. burgundy merino turtleneck
    02
    Burgundy fine-merino turtleneck

A high neck closes the gap between collar and chin on a 2.2°C / 36°F morning, and fine merino lies flat under the coat without a bulky roll. When the coat comes off in a heated hall or a trattoria, the knit still looks dressed. Burgundy is the one warm colour against the navy, and the loafers and gloves repeat it.

  3. slate-navy tailored trousers with belt loops, pressed creases and narrow cuffs
    03
    Slate-navy tailored trousers, straight leg

Pitti's week runs into the evening. The fair closes at 6pm, about an hour after sunset, and in 2027 guest designer Dunhill stages its salon show on the evening of Thursday 14 January. Wool trousers with belt loops and a pressed crease take a day on foot into dinner without a hotel stop, and slate navy keeps the coat and trousers as one line.

  4. navy marled wool scarf
    04
    Navy wool scarf, narrow

Wind it once before you step out in the morning. With a 2.2°C / 36°F low and frost on about 11 nights, the scarf does the job the turtleneck cannot do outdoors: it closes the coat's collar. Navy on navy keeps everything above the waist to one colour, so the burgundy shows.

  5. oxblood rubber-tread loafers
    05
    Oxblood leather loafers, rubber tread

Rain falls on about 9 January days, and the centre is paved in stone slabs, so a smooth leather sole is the shoe that slides. A thin rubber tread keeps the loafer low and dressed while it grips. Loafers slip off in seconds in a fitting room once the sales open, and oxblood picks up the turtleneck without adding a fourth colour.

  6. oxblood lined leather gloves
    06
    Oxblood leather gloves, lined

January is the frostiest month on NOAA's Peretola record, with about 11 nights at 0°C or lower. Lined leather gloves keep your hands warm on the walk out and come off in one pull when you need your phone. They match the loafers and the bag, and go into a coat pocket indoors.

  7. oxblood zip shoulder bag
    07
Small oxblood leather shoulder bag, zip top

The UK Foreign Office tells travellers in Italy to take care "in crowded areas and in city centres, including main train and metro stations", and Pitti names Santa Maria Novella, 250 metres from the gate, as the fair's main station. A small zip-top bag on a short strap, worn in front, closes completely. It holds the phone with your ticket, an ID and a card.

  8. cream pointed-collar silk blouse
    08
    Cream silk blouse, pointed collar

This is the evening top. Pitti week does not stop at the Fortezza's 6pm close, and a silk blouse under the same long coat turns the day outfit into a dinner one without a second coat or shoes. Cream is the light note against navy and oxblood. Silk folds small, and it dries overnight if you rinse it in the hotel sink.

Day to night

Morning

Long navy coat buttoned, burgundy turtleneck, navy scarf, slate-navy trousers, oxblood loafers, gloves on. Sunrise in Pitti week is about 7:47, and the Fortezza opens at 9am. With a trade ticket, check the coat at the free cloakroom inside; without one, the morning is yours for the Oltrarno.

Evening

Turtleneck off and the cream silk blouse on under the same coat, scarf wound again. The fair closes at 6pm, about an hour after sunset, and Pitti's special events carry on into the evening. The walk back is heading for a 2°C / 36°F low, so keep the gloves in the coat pocket for it.

A suggested look — long navy wool coat, burgundy merino turtleneck, navy wool scarf, slate-navy tailored trousers, oxblood leather loafers.

What to avoid

  • Waiting outside the Fortezza for street style that happens inside it
  • A Pitti ticket in someone else's name
  • A smooth dress sole on wet stone
  • An open tote on a crowded station platform
  • Full-price shopping in the days before the sales

Frequently asked questions

Frosty at dawn and mild by mid-afternoon. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Firenze Peretola, on the plain northwest of the Duomo, gives an average high of 11.2°C / 52°F and a low of 2.2°C / 36°F, about 60mm of rain on roughly 9 days, and frost on about 11 nights, more than any other month. The coldest mornings follow clear, still nights, when LaMMA, Tuscany's weather service, describes cold air settling on the plain. Sunrise stays between 7:46 and 7:49 until mid-month, and sunset moves from 4:48pm on 1 January to about 5:23pm on the 31st.

A long navy wool coat, a burgundy merino turtleneck, a cream silk blouse for the evening, slate-navy tailored trousers, a navy wool scarf, oxblood loafers with a rubber tread, lined oxblood leather gloves and a small oxblood zip-top shoulder bag. That covers a 2°C / 36°F dawn, an 11°C / 52°F afternoon and dinner in Pitti week without a second coat. Leave smooth-soled shoes at home: rain falls on about 9 days.

Only if you work in the trade. Pitti says the event "is reserved for trade professionals only and is not open to the general public", and it lists "Fashion lovers and end customers" among the categories not admitted. Pitti Uomo 111 runs from Tuesday 12 to Friday 15 January 2027 at the Fortezza da Basso, Viale Filippo Strozzi 1, from 9am to 6pm, and to 4pm on the Friday, when registration closes at 2pm. Registration asks for company documents and a valid ID. Tickets cost €20 until 27 November, €30 from 28 November to 11 January and €50 during the fair. Pitti lists a free cloakroom inside and free luggage storage at Santa Maria Novella, platform 16.

Mid-January is Pitti week: 12 to 15 January 2027, with a special event by guest designer Kartik Research on Wednesday the 13th and Dunhill's salon show on the evening of Thursday the 14th. The Fortezza stays busy after that, with Pitti Bimbo on 20 and 21 January and Pitti Filati, the knitting-yarn fair, on 20 to 22 January. Early January brings the winter sales, which Tuscany starts on the first working day before Epiphany; the 2027 date is not published, and in 2026 they began on Saturday 3 January, set to run 60 days. Late January has more light: sunset passes 5pm from the 14th.

A little colder at night, drier, and busier in the middle of the month. NOAA's Peretola record gives January 11.2°C / 52°F by day and 2.2°C / 36°F at night, with about 11 frost nights and about 9 wet days, against December's 11.5°C and 2.8°C / 37°F, with about 9 frost nights and about 12 wet days. December is the basin frost and the Duomo tree, which is why our December guide is built on a bottle-green coat, rust knitwear and treaded ankle boots. January is Pitti week, so a long navy coat, a turtleneck, a silk blouse for the evening and oxblood loafers take over.

Tailoring, and more of it in Pitti week. Gucci's history records that "Guccio Gucci established his eponymous artisanal luggage atelier in 1921 on Via della Vigna Nuova in Florence", and that in 1981 the house showed a Flora-inspired collection in the Sala Bianca during the fashion shows at Palazzo Pitti, which Gucci calls the predecessor to Milan Fashion Week. Pitti's own history quotes The Sartorialist's Scott Schuman on the fair: "You find some of the best-dressed men on the planet." It also notes that streetwear now shares the Fortezza with tweed coats and loafers. For a visitor, the Florentine answer is a long wool coat, a fine knit and a leather shoe with a sole that grips wet stone.
