What to Wear in Melbourne in January

Pack for two climates in one week. The Bureau of Meteorology's Olympic Park figures put January at 26.8°C by day and 16.5°C at night, with 53mm of rain over about 5 days, but nobody lives the average. Nearly 9 days reach 30°C and more than 3 reach 35°C, while one day in ten peaks at 20.5°C or less. The Bureau explains the swing: hot northerlies from the interior, then a front, a southwesterly off the Southern Ocean and a fall of up to 20°C in about an hour. On 27 January 2026 Olympic Park hit 42.7°C, and the next day peaked at 23.6°C. The Australian Open, 11 to 31 January 2027 in the same sporting precinct, keeps you outside for both. So pack cotton and a canvas brim for the heat, and a navy chore jacket and chinos for the change.

   Pack it for the day after the heat. The Bureau of Meteorology says a Melbourne cool change can cut the temperature by up to 20°C in about an hour, and in January 2026 Olympic Park went from 42.7°C on the 27th to 23.6°C on the 28th. An unlined cotton chore jacket covers that drop without wool, and its patch pockets take sunglasses and a phone once the belt bag is full.

   Navy cotton polo, pale blue striped collar and cuffs

   Wear this on the cooler days between heatwaves. SunSmart asks for shirts with collars, and in the open stands the sun sits on the back of your neck for a whole set. A navy cotton polo gives you the collar, the striped trim reads as tennis without dressing up as a player, and it goes under the chore jacket for a night session after the change.

   Pale yellow cotton button-down, long sleeves

   Sleeves are SunSmart's first line: it asks for long-sleeved shirts, preferably with collars, and a close weave. A pale yellow cotton button-down worn open over the dress covers your arms through a day on the outside courts and still lets air move at 35°C. Roll the cuffs in the shade of an arena seat, and bring them down again outside.

   Pale blue knee-length dress, band collar, drawstring waist

   For the heat days. BoM's Olympic Park record gives January 8.8 days of 30°C or more and 3.4 of 35°C, and on those days you want loose cotton that stands off the skin. A knee-length dress with a band collar and cuffed sleeves covers more than a sundress, and the drawstring lets air through at the waist. Pale blue also shows less sweat than white after a day in the stands.

   Cream straight-leg cotton chinos

   Chinos cover the other half of the month. One January day in ten peaks at 20.5°C or less on BoM's Olympic Park record, and a change after a hot spell makes the late walk to Jolimont station feel colder than that. Straight-leg cotton twill keeps your shins covered, as SunSmart prefers, and cream sits under the navy polo, the yellow shirt and the chore jacket alike.

   Off-white low-top sneakers, navy heel tab

   Melbourne Park is a day on foot: four entrances with arenas and outside courts spread between them, and the Richmond entrance opens only from 17 to 24 January. Off-white low-tops with a flat rubber sole handle the concrete concourses and an hour on your feet at the Grand Slam Oval fan stage. Break them in first, because the AO's conditions bar removing your footwear anywhere in the grounds.

   Natural canvas wide-brim hat, black sunglasses, SPF 50

   On its heat day in 2026 the AO asked everyone to prepare by "wearing hats and applying sunscreen". Canvas does the first job better than straw: SunSmart warns that loosely woven straw can let UV in and asks for a densely woven fabric. It also wants SPF 50 on any skin you cannot cover, reapplied at least every two hours, and sunglasses that cover your eyes from every angle.

   Tan leather zip-top belt bag

   One bag is the rule. Tennis Australia's 2027 conditions allow one bag per person, refuse anything too large to fit under a seat, and will not cloak large bags. A tan leather belt bag holds a phone, the sunscreen and the folded sunglasses, sits on your hip in the crowd at Garden Square, and it is the one warm colour against navy, yellow, pale blue and cream.
