TL;DR

Mumbai in December: 32°C / 90°F afternoons, 21°C / 70°F nights at Colaba, a city AQI in CPCB's "Moderate" band and Christmas week to finish.

Do
  • Rust cotton stole — over the shoulders for Midnight Mass, around them when Santacruz drops to 18.4°C before dawn
  • Ivory cotton kurta — long sleeves cover the arms for Siddhivinayak or Haji Ali on a 32.2°C day
  • Indigo wide-leg trousers — knees covered, with air moving at 71% humidity
  • Navy shirt-dress — from Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve to dinner without a change
  • Cream espadrilles with ankle straps — jute and canvas breathe, and there is almost no rain to spoil them
  • A white N95 if you have asthma — CPCB's "Moderate" health line names lungs, asthma and heart disease
Don't
  • The monsoon kit — IMD counts 0.3 rainy days at Colaba in December
  • One city AQI as your street's — CPCB itself calls averaging across locations unsound
  • Haji Ali on Christmas Day — it is a Friday, when the trust counts 20,000–30,000 visitors
  • Colaba's 21.2°C low for the airport suburbs — Santacruz averages 18.4°C

December is the haze month, and it ends in Christmas week. IMD's normal for Colaba gives a 32.2°C afternoon, a 21.2°C night and almost no rain, so this is cotton weather from the first day to the last. The air is the variable. CPCB's 4pm bulletins put Mumbai in its "Moderate" band on 29 of 31 days last December, at a mean of about 119, and on all 31 days of December 2024, at about 155. That band carries its own health line: "Breathing discomfort to the people with lungs, asthma and heart diseases." Pack ivory, indigo, marigold and rust cotton, a stole for church and cooler suburban nights, and a mask if that line describes you.

December in Mumbai is cotton weather under a haze: dress for a 32°C afternoon, carry a stole for church and the cooler suburbs, and read CPCB's number before you read the sky.

The capsule

  1. Rust cotton stole with a twisted fringe
    01
Rust cotton stole with a twisted fringe

Your one layer in a month with no cold in it. Colaba's December night falls to 21.2°C, but Santacruz, the airport station, runs 2.8°C cooler, with a mean low of 18.4°C before dawn. A long cotton stole goes around your shoulders then, and over them for Midnight Mass or a temple visit, where covered shoulders are the safe choice.

  2. Ivory long cotton kurta with a band collar, half placket and side slits
    02

Mumbai's cotton comes with a date. Bombay Dyeing's page says it was "Established by Nowrosjee Wadia in 1879 as a small operation of Indian spun cotton yarn dip dyed by hand". A knee-length kurta with long sleeves covers your arms and shoulders for Siddhivinayak or Haji Ali and still breathes at 32.2°C and 71% humidity; roll the cuffs between visits.

  3. Marigold cotton blouse, elbow sleeves
    03
    Marigold cotton blouse, elbow sleeves

Your second top, for the week the city lights up. Maharashtra Tourism describes Christmas week as one of lit markets, decorations and gift stalls. Marigold sits warm against the indigo trousers and the rust stole, elbow sleeves cover the shoulder, and voile-weight cotton stays bearable when the afternoon has reached 32.2°C.

  4. Indigo pleated wide-leg trousers
    04
    Indigo pleated wide-leg trousers

Knees covered without heat held against the leg. A wide, pleated leg lets air move on a 32.2°C afternoon, and the full length is the safe choice at Siddhivinayak, whose trust publishes darshan hours but no dress rule, and at Haji Ali, whose trust says plainly: "Non-Muslims are also allowed to visit the Dargah." Indigo takes the kurta and the marigold blouse in turn.

  5. Navy short-sleeve shirt-dress with a point collar and tie belt
    05

For Christmas Eve. Maharashtra Tourism describes the night simply: "Special prayer services are held at churches on Christmas Eve, where people come together to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ." A collared navy shirt-dress to the knee suits a church at midnight, the rust stole covers its short sleeves, and Friday 25 December is the bank holiday that follows.

  6. Cream canvas espadrilles with tan leather ankle straps and jute soles
    06
Cream canvas espadrilles with tan ankle straps

Canvas uppers and braided jute soles let a 32.2°C afternoon breathe, and with 3.4mm of rain in an average December at Colaba, jute is safe all month. A buckled ankle strap keeps the shoe on through a temple queue, a church step and a Christmas-week market in one day. Cream sits under every colour in the capsule, from rust to marigold.

  7. Tan pebbled-leather camera crossbody bag with a zip top

Crowds come in numbers at Haji Ali. Its trust counts 10,000–15,000 visitors a day, rising to 20,000–30,000 on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, and Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year. A zip top and a strap worn across your body keep the bag shut and in front of you, with room for the folded mask and the stole.

  8. White flat-fold N95
    08

For you if you have asthma or a heart or lung condition. CPCB's "Moderate" band, an AQI of 101–200, carries a health warning for exactly those groups. Mumbai's city reading sat in that band on 29 of 31 days last December and on every day of December 2024. A flat-fold N95 lies flat in the bag until you need it.

Day to night

Morning

Temple morning. Ivory cotton kurta · indigo wide-leg trousers · cream espadrilles · tan crossbody with the N95 inside · rust stole. Siddhivinayak's morning darshan runs from 6am to noon, Wednesday to Monday, and Haji Ali is open from 5:30am to 10pm. Sunrise comes at about 7:04am in mid-December; check CPCB's reading before you set out.

Evening

Christmas Eve. Navy shirt-dress · rust stole over the shoulders · cream espadrilles · tan crossbody. Sunset is at about 6:03pm mid-month, and churches hold Midnight Mass. On the other nights of Christmas week, swap the dress for the marigold blouse and the indigo trousers.

  • Colaba's 21.2°C low as the suburbs' low
  • A sleeveless top for Midnight Mass or Siddhivinayak

Frequently asked questions

Hot and dry. The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) normal for its Colaba observatory gives December an average high of 32.2°C / 90°F and a low of 21.2°C / 70°F, with 3.4mm of rain on 0.3 rainy days (IMD counts a day with 2.5mm or more) and 71% relative humidity. Santacruz, the airport station, is a shade warmer by day at 32.6°C and 2.8°C cooler at night, at 18.4°C. Sunrise moves from 6:55am on 1 December to 7:11am on the 31st, and sunset from 5:59pm to 6:11pm.

A rust cotton stole, an ivory cotton kurta, a marigold cotton blouse, indigo wide-leg trousers, a navy shirt-dress, cream espadrilles with tan ankle straps, a tan crossbody and a white N95. That covers 32°C afternoons, a temple and a dargah in one morning, Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and Santacruz's 18.4°C dawns. Leave the umbrella: Colaba averages 0.3 rainy days in December.

It sits in CPCB's "Moderate" band most days, not in "Poor". On the Central Pollution Control Board's daily 4pm bulletins, Mumbai's city AQI averaged about 119 in December 2025, with 29 Moderate days and 2 Satisfactory, and about 155 in December 2024, all 31 Moderate. The highest reading was 199, on 18 December 2024, one short of the band's ceiling of 200. December was hazier than January in each of the last two winters. CPCB's health statement for the band is "Breathing discomfort to the people with lungs, asthma and heart diseases", and its bulletin adds that "Air quality may show variations across locations", so check the monitoring station nearest you on its website. If you have asthma, pack an N95.

Late December has Christmas week, and last year it had the cleanest air. In December 2025 CPCB's city AQI peaked at 138 on the 4th and fell to 86, "Satisfactory", on the 24th. Maharashtra Tourism says Christmas celebrations "last for an entire week, with preparations beginning in early December", with Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve; Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, is the only December bank holiday on the Reserve Bank of India's Mumbai list. Siddhivinayak marks Sankashti Chaturthi on Saturday 26 December. Sunset moves later, from 5:59pm on the 1st to 6:11pm on the 31st.

January is cooler; December is hazier. IMD's Colaba normal gives January 30.2°C by day and 19.4°C at night, against December's 32.2°C and 21.2°C, and Santacruz falls to 16.9°C on a January night against 18.4°C in December. Both months are effectively rainless, with 0.3 and 0.1 rainy days. On CPCB's bulletins, December was the hazier month in each of the last two winters: a mean of 118.5 against 108.4 in 2025–26, and 154.7 against 136.5 in 2024–25. December ends in Christmas week. Our January guide is built around its third week, when Makar Sankranti, Mumbai Gallery Weekend and the Tata Mumbai Marathon fall between Thursday 14 and Sunday 17 January.

Cotton that covers the shoulders and knees, as a courtesy rather than a rule. Neither the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple Trust nor the Haji Ali Dargah Trust publishes a dress code on its own site; both publish hours. The temple, its trust writes, "was first consecrated on Thursday 19th November 1801, a fact that is noted in government records". The dargah stands "about 500 yards from the Mumbai shoreline in the middle of the Arabian Sea", is open from 5:30am to 10pm, and welcomes visitors of every faith. For the cotton itself, the city has a mill name with a date: Bombay Dyeing, founded by Nowrosjee Wadia in 1879. A long cotton kurta over wide trousers, with a stole in the bag, suits both visits.
