TL;DR

Mumbai in January: 30°C / 86°F afternoons, 19°C / 66°F nights at Colaba, and Sankranti, Gallery Weekend and the marathon between Thursday 14 and Sunday 17 January.

Do
  • Indigo khadi jacket — start waves go at 5am, more than two hours before a 7:15am sunrise
  • White cotton shirt — sleeves up between galleries at 30.2°C, down after a 6:21pm sunset
  • Fuchsia cotton midi skirt — four afternoons of gallery openings, noon to 8pm
  • Cream wide-leg jeans — a marathon morning at the roadside, then air through the leg by afternoon
  • Cream lace-up sneakers — the organiser warns of long queues at the venue gates
  • Ochre suede crossbody — hands free from a 5am start to an 8pm gallery close
Don't
  • Colaba's 19.4°C low for an early start from the suburbs — Santacruz averages 16.9°C
  • Counting on a race place — marathon registration closes 5 November 2026, sooner if places fill
  • Galleries before noon — the weekend's hours run from 12pm to 8pm
  • Rain gear — IMD counts 0.1 rainy days at Colaba in January

Plan January around its third week. Makar Sankranti falls on Thursday 14 January, the day Mumbai Gallery Weekend opens four days of exhibitions, and the Tata Mumbai Marathon closes the week on Sunday 17 January. The organiser's history page puts it plainly: "Every third Sunday of January, thousands of runners from India and across the globe gather on the streets of Mumbai". IMD's normal for Colaba makes January the coolest month, 30.2°C by day and 19.4°C at night, and Santacruz, the airport station, falls to 16.9°C. Pack cotton in white, mustard and fuchsia for the galleries, and an indigo khadi jacket for a 5am start.

January's third week asks for two outfits a day: a khadi jacket for a 5am pavement before sunrise, and cotton in mustard and fuchsia for galleries that open at noon.

The capsule

  1. Indigo khadi jacket, band collar
    01
    Indigo khadi jacket, band collar

Your layer for Sunday 17 January. The marathon's start waves go "from 5 a.m. onwards", more than two hours before a 7:15am sunrise, in the month IMD's normal makes Mumbai's coolest: nights fall to 19.4°C at Colaba and 16.9°C at Santacruz. Khadi suits it. The Khadi and Village Industries Commission, headquartered at Vile Parle, calls the cloth "Warm in Winter, Cool in Summer".

  2. White Cotton Button-Down
    02
    White cotton button-down

Mumbai Gallery Weekend keeps its galleries open from noon to 8pm, Thursday to Sunday, and this shirt covers the whole stretch. Roll the sleeves for a 30.2°C walk between rooms and bring them down after a 6:21pm sunset. White sits under the indigo jacket at dawn on marathon Sunday and over the fuchsia skirt by afternoon.

  3. Mustard cotton top, elbow sleeves
    03
    Mustard cotton top, elbow sleeves

Your colour for Thursday 14 January, when Makar Sankranti and the first day of Gallery Weekend fall together. Maharashtra Tourism describes the festival in the state: "women host haldi-kumkum ceremonies, children enjoy colorful kite festivals, and families come together for delicious feasts." Elbow sleeves cover the shoulder, and cotton suits a 30.2°C afternoon at 70% humidity.

  4. Fuchsia cotton midi skirt
    04
    Fuchsia cotton midi skirt

For the openings. Mumbai Gallery Weekend calls itself "A four day art weekend with exhibitions by the leading art galleries in Mumbai", and four afternoons in and out of galleries suit a skirt that moves. A gathered cotton midi to mid-calf stays cool at 30.2°C, covers the knee, and takes the white shirt or the mustard top.

  5. Cream Wide-Leg Jeans
    05
    Cream wide-leg jeans

For marathon morning at the roadside. Denim shrugs off a kerb or a railing, cream keeps it light under the indigo jacket in the dark, and the wide leg lets air through once the afternoon climbs to 30.2°C. With 0.6mm of rain in an average January at Colaba, a pale hem stays clean on the way to a gallery at noon.

  6. Cream lace-up low-top sneakers
    06
    Cream lace-up sneakers

Marathon Sunday is a morning on your feet. Start waves leave from 5am, the start line closes at 5:30am, and the organiser tells runners to plan "keeping in mind long queues to enter the event venue gates". Laced sneakers with a cushioned sole carry you through the wait and on to the last day of Gallery Weekend, which opens at noon.

  7. Dark brown tooled-leather backless slippers
    07
    Dark brown leather backless slippers

The dressier shoe for gallery evenings. A closed toe and an open back slip on after a morning in sneakers, and dark brown leather goes with fuchsia, mustard and cream alike. Galleries stay open until 8pm, well after a 6:21pm mid-month sunset, and with 0.1 rainy days at Colaba in January, leather soles are safe all week.

  8. Ochre suede camera crossbody bag with a zip top
    08
    Ochre suede camera crossbody

Hands free for a week of three events. A zip top keeps your phone and cash shut in a marathon crowd, and the strap stays across your body from a 5am start to an 8pm gallery close. Ochre suede picks up the mustard top and sits easily with indigo, and in a month with 0.6mm of rain, suede is safe.

Frequently asked questions

Warm by day, at its coolest at night, and dry. The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) normal for its Colaba observatory gives January an average high of 30.2°C / 86°F and a low of 19.4°C, with 0.6mm of rain on 0.1 rainy days and 70% relative humidity: the coolest month of the year. Santacruz, the airport station, runs 2.5°C colder at night, at 16.9°C. The lowest minimums on record are 11.7°C at Colaba, on 15 January 1935, and 7.4°C at Santacruz, on 22 January 1962. Sunrise stays between 7:12am and 7:15am all month; sunset moves from 6:12pm on 1 January to 6:31pm on the 31st.

An indigo khadi jacket, a white cotton shirt, a mustard cotton top, a fuchsia cotton midi skirt, cream wide-leg jeans, cream lace-up sneakers, dark brown leather slippers and an ochre suede crossbody. That covers a 5am marathon start before sunrise, four afternoons of gallery openings at 30°C and Makar Sankranti on Thursday 14 January. Leave the rain gear: Colaba averages 0.1 rainy days in January.

Layers for the dark. The 2027 race is on Sunday 17 January, and in the marathon category, the organiser says, "a sequence of Start Waves will occur from 5 a.m. onwards", with the start line closing at 5:30am. Sunrise is about 7:15am, and IMD's normal puts January nights at 19.4°C at Colaba and 16.9°C at Santacruz, so an indigo khadi jacket over a cotton shirt, with jeans and laced sneakers, covers the wait. Start venues and times are still listed as TBD. If you hoped to run, marathon registration closes on 5 November 2026, or sooner if places fill, and general Dream Run registrations are closed. Its history page traces the race to a visit Procam's founders, the brothers Anil and Vivek Singh, made to the London Marathon: "Everything changed in 2003." It is now a World Athletics Gold Label race.

Mid-January has the events. Makar Sankranti falls on Thursday 14 January on the central government's 2027 list of restricted holidays; Maharashtra's own list is not out, and in 2026 Mumbai's bank holiday for it was 15 January. Maharashtra Tourism gives the festival's greeting, "Tilgul ghya ani god god bola", and its meaning: have sesame-jaggery sweets and speak sweetly. Mumbai Gallery Weekend runs 14–17 January, the marathon expo 14–16 January and the race on Sunday 17 January. Late January brings Republic Day, Tuesday 26 January, and last season it had the cleaner air: CPCB's city AQI peaked at 140 on 4 January 2026 and fell to 70, "Satisfactory", on the 28th.

January is cooler; December is hazier. IMD's Colaba normal gives January 30.2°C by day and 19.4°C at night, against December's 32.2°C and 21.2°C, and Santacruz falls to 16.9°C on a January night against 18.4°C in December. Both months are effectively rainless. On CPCB's bulletins, January was the cleaner month in each of the last two winters: a mean of 108.4 against 118.5 in 2025–26, and 136.5 against 154.7 in 2024–25. Sunset moves from 6:03pm in mid-December to 6:21pm in mid-January. December ends in Christmas week, which our December guide covers; January's draw is its third week.

Khadi is, in the Khadi and Village Industries Commission's words, "a handspun and hand woven cloth which acquired patriotic status during Indian freedom struggle". The commission is a statutory body set up by Act of Parliament No. 61 of 1956; in April 1957 it took over the work of the former All India Khadi and Village Industries Board, and its headquarters, Gramodaya, stand on Irla Road in Vile Parle (West), Mumbai. Its page calls khadi "Warm in Winter, Cool in Summer". That is the case for a khadi jacket in a week that runs from a 16.9°C night at Santacruz to a 30.2°C afternoon at Colaba.
