A short-sleeve knit takes the edge off a breezy terrace without the bulk of a jacket, buttons over the sundress, and pistachio sits between the butter yellow and the peach.

El Portal, the visitor centre, opens daily from 8am to 4pm and charges $8 for visitors 16 and over; its holiday closures fall in November, December and January, not February. The Forest Service posts trail closures on its status page and asks for shoes with traction, because the forest is wet and mossy. Wear thick-soled trainers and long jeans, and keep the cardigan for the drive back. Rideshare apps cannot collect you at the gates, so plan the return before you go.
