What to Wear in Boston in February
Boston in February: 4°C / 39°F afternoons, −4°C / 25°F nights, and two Monday nights of Beanpot hockey at TD Garden, 1 and 8 February 2027.
- Navy wool toggle duffle, hip length. TD Garden has no coat check, so the coat folds onto your lap for two games
- Forest green lambswool crew. With the coat on your lap, it is the layer you watch the hockey in
- Mid-wash straight-leg jeans, full length. They fall over the boot, so no ankle shows in Logan's 12.4 mph mean February wind
- Dark brown waterproof Chelsea boots on a lug sole. An inch or more of snow falls on about 3 February days at Logan
- Tan leather half-moon crossbody, about 6 inches wide. TD Garden caps bags at 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches
- Oatmeal wool scarf, cream ribbed beanie, brown shearling-lined mittens. The National Weather Service rates mittens above gloves
- A tote, a backpack or a clear stadium bag to TD Garden. Anything over 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches costs $15 at the North Station bag check
- A knee-length coat to the Beanpot. With no coat check, a long coat spends two games bunched on your lap
- Suede or smooth soles after snow. The City of Boston gives owners three hours to clear a sidewalk, so your first walk is on packed snow
- Dressing for the 4°C / 39°F afternoon. NOAA's hourly normals for Logan average 0°C / 32°F by 9pm
Pack for a seat with no coat check. NOAA's figures for Boston Logan give February afternoons of 4°C / 39°F and nights that fall to −4°C / 25°F, with 14.4 inches of snow in a normal month. The month's fixture is indoors: the Beanpot, which TD Garden's history calls Boston's "social event of the winter season", first played in 1952 and held on two Monday nights. The Garden is blunt: "TD Garden does not provide an area to check coats or any other personal belongings." Bags stop at 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches. So pack a hip-length coat that folds onto your lap, a knit you can sit in, and a crossbody the size of a wallet.
At the Beanpot your coat spends two games on your lap, because TD Garden has no coat check. Bring a coat that folds small and a bag that fits in your hand.
The capsule
01Navy wool toggle duffle coat, hip length, hoodedTD Garden has no coat check outside its members' clubs, so at the Beanpot your coat sits on your lap through two games. A hip-length duffle folds into a square there; a knee-length coat bunches into the footwell. Horn toggles close with mittens on, and the hood goes up on the walk out as the night falls toward −4°C / 25°F.
02Forest green lambswool crewWith the duffle folded on your lap, this crew is the layer you watch two games of hockey in, so it has to be warm on its own. Lambswool does that without a cable knit's bulk, and the duffle still closes over it for a 3°C / 37°F mid-afternoon on NOAA's hourly normals for Logan. A crew neck leaves room for the scarf.
03Mid-wash blue straight-leg jeans, full lengthFull-length straight legs fall over the boot shaft, so no ankle shows on the walk out, when NOAA's hourly normals for Logan average 0°C / 32°F at 9pm. Denim takes two games on an arena seat with a folded coat on top of it. Mid-wash blue sits a shade lighter than the navy duffle, so the two read as separate pieces rather than a suit.
04Dark brown waterproof leather Chelsea boots, lug soleSnow of an inch or more falls on about 3 days in a normal February at Logan, and the City of Boston gives property owners three hours after it stops to clear a 42-inch path. You walk in that gap. A lug sole grips packed snow, waterproof leather sheds slush, and elastic sides mean no laces to retie with cold fingers.
05Tan leather half-moon crossbody, buckled strap"Small bags, clutches, crossbodies and wristlets are permitted," TD Garden says, up to 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches, clear bags included. This half-moon stands about two-thirds as tall as it is wide, so at 6 inches across it rises about 4. Keep it under 1.5 inches deep: phone, card, keys. Anything bigger costs $15 at the bag check in North Station.
06Oatmeal long wool scarf, fringedNOAA's hourly normals give Logan a mean February wind of 12.4 mph, and the National Weather Service's cold-weather advice is blunt: "Stay out of the wind when possible." On the walk out of the Garden you can't, so a long scarf wraps twice over the crew neck. Inside, it folds onto the coat on your lap. Oatmeal wool sits easily with cream, tan and navy.
07Dark brown leather mittens, shearling-lined"Mittens are better than gloves," the National Weather Service writes, and Logan's low reaches freezing on about 22 nights in a normal February. Shearling holds the warmth and smooth leather sheds wet snow. Entry to TD Garden is mobile-ticket only, so slip the mittens into the duffle's patch pocket at the gate, show your phone, and pull them back on outside.
08Cream ribbed wool beanie, folded cuff"Wear a warm hat in the winter," the National Weather Service advises. On the first Beanpot Monday the sun sets at 4:58pm, and in 2026 the first semifinal started at 4:30pm, so expect to arrive in daylight and leave in the dark. A ribbed beanie fits in a coat pocket for the games and under the hood for the walk out. Cream matches the oatmeal scarf.
Day to night
Monday 1 February, before the first game: forest green crew · mid-wash jeans · brown Chelsea boots · navy duffle toggled · oatmeal scarf · tan crossbody across the body. A 3°C / 37°F mid-afternoon on NOAA's hourly normals for Logan, your mobile ticket on your phone, and a sunset at 4:58pm.
Beanpot night at TD Garden: the same layers, the duffle folded on your lap, beanie and mittens in its patch pockets, the crossbody at your hip. Out after the second game into air that averages 0°C / 32°F at 9pm on NOAA's hourly normals: scarf wound twice, beanie and mittens on, and a night that falls to −4°C / 25°F by dawn.
A suggested look — navy hooded toggle duffle coat, forest green lambswool crew, mid-wash straight-leg jeans, dark brown leather chelsea boots, oatmeal wool scarf.
What to avoid
- A tote or a backpack: TD Garden caps bags at 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches, clear bags included
- A coat past the hip: with no coat check, it sits bunched on your lap through two games
- Suede or smooth soles: snow of an inch or more falls on about 3 days in a normal February
- Heading to the Garden on a storm Monday without checking: TD Garden posts weather postponements on its website and social channels
- Parking on a posted snow emergency artery: the City of Boston tickets and tows cars there during a declared snow emergency
Frequently asked questions
Cold, with a few snowy days and most nights below freezing. NOAA's figures for Boston Logan give February an average high of 39.0°F (3.9°C) and a low of 24.6°F (−4.1°C), with 3.21 inches of precipitation over about 11 days and 14.4 inches of snow. An inch or more of snow falls on about 3 days, the high stays at or below freezing on about 7, and the low reaches freezing on about 22 nights. NOAA's hourly normals add a mean wind of 12.4 mph. The month also holds Boston's snow record: the National Weather Service office in Caribou counts February 2015 as the city's all-time record month. Daylight grows from 10h 00m on the 1st (6:58am to 4:58pm) to 11h 11m on the 28th (6:21am to 5:32pm).
A hip-length navy wool toggle duffle with a hood, a forest green lambswool crew, mid-wash straight-leg jeans, dark brown waterproof Chelsea boots on a lug sole, a tan leather crossbody no larger than 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches, a long oatmeal wool scarf, dark brown shearling-lined leather mittens and a cream ribbed beanie. That covers a 4°C / 39°F afternoon, a Beanpot night with your coat on your lap, and a 9pm walk out at about 0°C / 32°F. Leave the tote, the long coat and anything suede at home.
Layers you can sit in, a coat that folds, and a bag that fits in your hand. The Beanpot, between Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern, is played at TD Garden on "the first two Mondays in February": 1 and 8 February 2027, by Northeastern's published schedule, with the semifinals on the 1st and the final and third-place game on the 8th. TD Garden has no coat check outside its members' clubs, entry is mobile-ticket only through security screening, and bags may be no larger than 6 × 4 × 1.5 inches. In 2026 the two games each night started at 4:30pm and 7:30pm. If a storm postpones a game, TD Garden posts the news on its website and social channels.
Early February for the Beanpot; late February for longer, slightly milder days, with crowds in the week of the 15th. Logan's daily normals climb from 3°C / 37°F and −5°C / 23°F on the 1st to about 5°C / 41°F and −3°C / 27°F on the 28th, and sunset moves from 4:58pm to 5:32pm. Both Beanpot Mondays fall in the first half, on the 1st and the 8th. Presidents Day is Monday 15 February, and Boston Public Schools' February recess runs from the 16th to the 19th, so expect families at museums and rinks that week.
January, by a little, and the snow is level. NOAA's Logan figures put January at 3°C / 37°F by day and −5°C / 23°F at night, against February's 4°C / 39°F and −4°C / 25°F: about 2°F milder by day and 1.5°F by night. Snowfall is 14.3 inches in January and 14.4 in February. The high stays at or below freezing on about 10 January days against about 7 in February, and mid-month daylight grows from 9h 26m to 10h 35m. Pack the same waterproof boots for the snow. What changes is the light: by mid-February the sun sets at 5:16pm.
Wool, waterproof boots and a small bag, with two local lineages behind them. Talbots dates itself to 1947, when "Nancy and Rudy Talbot, two entrepreneurial New Englanders, created a clothing catalog"; they moved into a historic house in Hingham, on the South Shore, and painted its front door a welcoming red "to signal hospitality". The Beanpot is the winter's own tradition: TD Garden dates its debut to 26 December 1952 at the old Boston Arena, and David Silk, a former Boston University forward and 1980 Olympic gold medallist, says "there are two words that come to mind: tradition and emotion." On a Beanpot Monday that lineage looks like a wool coat, a lambswool knit and boots that can take a snowbank.
