What to Wear in New York in February
New York in February: 6°C / 43°F afternoons, −1°C / 30°F nights and 10.1 inches of snow, the most of any month at Central Park.
- Burgundy knee-length down coat with a hood — snow lies an inch deep or more on about 9 days, and a hood needs no umbrella bag
- Pale grey crew-neck sweater — the coat goes to the coat check, and this is what you wear for two hours of galleries
- Charcoal slim wool trousers tucked into the boots — kerb slush stays outside the shaft
- Tan waterproof duck boots with a lug sole — city rules give owners until 11am to clear overnight snow
- Brown crochet beanie, charcoal scarf and tan leather mittens — about 18 nights fall to freezing or below
- Small tan top-handle bag on a crossbody strap — under the museum's 11 × 14 inch limit, so your phone and wallet stay with you
- An umbrella — The New York Historical makes you check it or carry it in a bag, so you queue for it twice
- Suede boots or smooth soles — salted slush stains suede and packed snow slides under a flat sole
- A backpack or a tote over 11 × 14 inches — it goes straight into the coat check
- Jeans hemmed over the boot — denim soaks up kerb slush to the shin
NOAA's figures make February the snowiest month at Central Park: 10.1 inches on average, with snow an inch deep or more on about 9 days and the low at or below freezing on about 18 nights. NWS New York's records agree. February 2010, at 36.9 inches, is the snowiest month since 1869, and February holds 14 of the 37 storms of a foot or more. So pack for the walk between storm and shovel, then for the warm room at the end of it. On 12 February The New York Historical, across from the park at 77th Street, opens Bill Cunningham: Individual Style. Arrive in a hood, boots and mittens, and leave the umbrella at the hotel.
February is the month New York gets its snow. Dress for the slush at the kerb on the way uptown, and for the coat check when you arrive.
The capsule
01Burgundy knee-length down coat with a hoodSnow lies an inch deep or more on about 9 February days in Central Park, and a hip-length jacket leaves your thighs open to the spray at every slushy crossing. A knee-length down coat covers them. Its hood does an umbrella's job, which matters uptown: The New York Historical asks you to check an umbrella or carry it in a protective bag.
02Pale grey crew-neck sweaterInside the museum this is your outfit. The New York Historical puts a visit at about two hours, and the coat spends them in the coat check, so the sweater carries you through the Cunningham galleries and the shoe museum on the same floor. Pale grey reads clean against charcoal trousers, and a crew neck leaves room for the scarf outdoors.
03Charcoal slim wool trousers, tucked into the bootsCity rules give building owners up to 14 hours to clear a sidewalk when snow stops in the evening, so the crossings stay grey with slush well into the next morning. Slim charcoal wool tucks inside a boot shaft where a wide hem drags through it, and the colour hides whatever splashes above the boot on the walk to dinner.
04Tan waterproof duck boots, rubber foot, lug soleWhen snow stops overnight, the Department of Sanitation gives owners until 11am to clear their sidewalks, so a morning walk crosses unshovelled stretches. A rubber foot keeps the slush out and a lug grips packed snow. The National Weather Service's cold-weather advice is blunt: "Keep your skin dry." Wet socks on a freezing day send you back to the hotel by lunch.
05Brown crochet beanie, folded cuffThe National Weather Service puts it plainly: "Wear a warm hat in the winter." The low reaches freezing or below on about 18 February nights in Central Park. A chunky crochet beanie sits under the coat's hood on the worst days and pushes into a sleeve at the coat check. Bill Cunningham ran a millinery business before he picked up a camera.
06Charcoal chunky-knit scarf, fringedOn about 4 February days the high never climbs above freezing in Central Park, and on those days a chunky rib scarf wrapped twice closes the gap between hood and collar. Charcoal hides slush spray and sidewalk salt, it ties the trousers to the top half, and it threads through a coat sleeve so the coat check hands back one bundle.
07Tan leather mittens, linedThe National Weather Service prefers mittens to gloves, and fingers kept together in one shell stay warmer than fingers apart. Smooth tan leather sheds the wet snow that soaks into a knit glove, the lining holds that warmth on a −1°C / 30°F night, and the colour repeats the boots and the bag.
08Small tan leather top-handle bag with a crossbody strapSize it to the coat check. The New York Historical's guidelines say "Bags larger than 11 x 14 inches and backpacks must be checked in our complimentary coat check," and the museum will not check phones, wallets or laptops at all. A small top-handle bag stays on you: across the body on icy steps, by the handle in the galleries.
Day to night
Pale grey sweater · charcoal trousers tucked into tan duck boots · burgundy down coat zipped, hood up if it snows · brown beanie · charcoal scarf · tan mittens · tan bag worn crossbody. Across the park on foot to 77th Street for the 11am opening at The New York Historical, then two hours in the Cunningham rooms and the Weitzman Shoe Museum on the same floor.
Same sweater and trousers · boots · coat back from the coat check · beanie and mittens back on for the walk home · bag by its top handle. On Fridays the museum stays open until 8pm, with pay-as-you-wish admission from 5pm; then dinner on the Upper West Side and the walk back on a night heading for −1°C / 30°F, dark since about 5:30pm.
A suggested look — burgundy hooded down coat, pale grey crew-neck sweater, charcoal slim wool trousers, tan duck boots, brown crochet beanie.
What to avoid
- An umbrella — the museum makes you check it or bag it
- Suede or smooth soles — overnight snow can sit on the sidewalk until 11am
- A backpack or tote over 11 × 14 inches — straight into the coat check
- Jeans worn over the boot — denim soaks up kerb slush
- Hat and mittens left in the bag — about 18 nights fall to freezing or below
Frequently asked questions
Snowy, cold and slowly lighter. NOAA's figures for Central Park give February 10.1 inches of snow, the most of any month, with snow an inch deep or more on about 9 days and an inch or more falling on about 2. The average high is 5.7°C and the average low 29.5°F. The high stays at or below freezing on about 4 days, and the low gets there on about 18 nights. Precipitation totals 3.19 inches across 10 days. The sun rises at 7:06am and sets at 5:13pm on 1 February; by the 28th it is up at 6:31am and down at 5:46pm, 11h 14m of daylight.
A burgundy knee-length down coat with a hood, a pale grey crew-neck sweater, charcoal slim wool trousers, tan waterproof duck boots with a rubber foot and lug sole, a brown crochet beanie, a charcoal chunky-knit scarf, tan leather mittens and a small tan top-handle bag on a crossbody strap. That covers a 6°C / 43°F walk across Central Park in fresh snow, two hours inside a museum with your coat in the coat check, and a −1°C / 30°F walk home from dinner. Leave the umbrella, suede and any bag bigger than 11 × 14 inches at the hotel.
Dress for the coat check. Bill Cunningham: Individual Style opens on Friday 12 February 2027 in the Klingenstein Family Gallery on the first floor and runs to 13 February 2028. The museum invites you to "Explore photographer Bill Cunningham's panoramic view of New York’s social landscape", drawn from his early career, the 1960s to the early 1990s; Vogue's Global Creative Director Raul Martinez is among its organisers, with Anna Wintour as special consultant. The visitor guidelines send bags over 11 × 14 inches and backpacks to the free coat check, want umbrellas checked or bagged, and will not check phones, wallets or laptops. Wear the sweater and trousers, carry the small bag, and go on a Friday: the museum is open 11am to 8pm and admission is pay-as-you-wish from 5pm (adults otherwise pay $24).
Early February for the best odds of snow on the ground, late February for the exhibition. NOAA's daily figures put an inch of snow on the ground in about a third of years between 7 and 9 February, the year's highest odds. Early on, the 151st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show names Best in Show at Madison Square Garden on 2 February, and Chinatown's Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony fills Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Saturday 6 February. Bill Cunningham: Individual Style opens on Friday 12 February, just before the Presidents' Day weekend (Monday 15 February), and the Chinatown Lunar New Year parade starts at 1pm on Sunday 21 February. Bryant Park's rink stays open daily until 28 February. The daily normal low climbs from 27.5°F on the 1st to 32°F by the 28th.
February is snowier and a little milder. NOAA's Central Park figures give it 10.1 inches of snow against January's 8.8, and snow lies an inch deep or more on about 9 days against 8. January runs colder on every measure: an average high of 4.2°C against 5.7°C, and a low of 27.9°F against 29.5°F, with about 20 nights at freezing or below against 18. February has 3.19 inches of precipitation against 3.64, and it gains more than an hour of light: 10h 41m on the 15th against 9h 35m. Our January guide packs for long walks between museums and matinees during NYC Tourism's winter deals. In February, pack for snow on the ground and a coat check at the end of the walk.
Practical layers, watched closely. Bill Cunningham photographed the city's streets for The New York Times, and in 2018, marking its acquisition of his objects and photographs, The New York Historical called him "one of the late 20th century’s most influential trend-spotters and style authorities" and showed his bicycle, his Nikon camera, his signature blue jacket and his William J hats. The Weitzman Shoe Museum, opened on 18 June 2026 on the same first floor, holds the footwear collection of Stuart Weitzman and Jane Gershon Weitzman, and argues that "the humble shoe also can be an object of desire, display, and deliberation, transcending its utilitarian purpose." On a February sidewalk that means a coat that covers the knee, a hat, and boots that take slush.
