What to Wear in Venice in November

Pack for water underfoot and one dressed evening. NOAA's Tessera airport record puts Venice's November at 13°C / 55°F by day and 5.9°C / 43°F at night, with 81mm across about 10 rain days. It is the high-water month: the Autorità per la Laguna closed the MOSE barriers on nine November days in 2025, the Salute feast morning among them. La Fenice, which stands in one of the city's lowest-lying areas, tells its audience to "bring along or actually wear rubber boots or waders any time the tide is expected to reach or surpass 100 cm". Fedora opens its season on 13 November, and the Biennale closes on the 22nd. So pack rubber to the knee, a belted trench over merino and a shirt the theatre accepts.

   Button it under the trench on the 7am vaporetto, near sunrise, when the air is still close to 6°C / 43°F, and open it over the shirt by lunch. Light merino adds warmth without bulk under a belted coat, and the V-neck leaves the collar room to sit out. By mid-month the sun sets at about twenty to five, so it goes back on before dinner.

   Pale blue cotton button-down, chest pocket

   La Fenice keeps black tie for the 13 November opening and, on its other evenings, allows a button-down shirt with jeans, so this is your Fedora shirt from the 17th to the 20th. Pale blue cotton tucks cleanly into the navy trousers at seven and sits collar-out under the cardigan on a day walk. Keep it pressed; it is the dressiest thing in the suitcase.

   One pair has to fold into a rubber boot at nine in the morning and sit in a La Fenice seat at seven in the evening. A wide leg in dark navy tucks into the boot shaft on a tide day and falls straight over the loafers at night, and the denim-look weave passes the theatre's rule allowing jeans on ordinary evenings.

   Navy rubber knee-high rain boots

   Nine November days in 2025 needed the MOSE barriers, seven of them between the 17th and the 25th, and a tide that stops short of a closure still reaches the lowest squares. Navy rubber to the knee lets you cross a flooded campo with the trousers tucked and dry. On a night the forecast reaches 100 cm, La Fenice asks for them at the opera too.

   Navy suede boat-shoe loafers, chunky lug sole, leather laces

   Wear them on a low-tide forecast and switch to rubber the moment it rises, because salt water leaves a line on suede. A chunky lug grips wet stone on the bridges after any of the 10 rain days, and navy suede under the wide-leg trousers passes at a Fedora evening. They are also your Biennale shoe for its last week, which ends on 22 November.

   Tan structured leather top-handle bag, turn-lock, shoulder strap

   Small enough to stay with you at La Fenice, which sends big bags and umbrellas to its free cloakroom. The turn-lock shuts properly on a rocking vaporetto, and the shoulder strap frees both hands on the 4 km of raised walkways Veritas lays for high water. Tan leather picks up the stone of the trench against a lower half that is all navy.

   About 7 November days bring more than 1mm of rain, so this umbrella gets opened, not just carried. It folds small enough for the tan bag, and the wrist strap lets it hang while one hand holds the vaporetto rail and the other your ticket. At La Fenice it goes to the free cloakroom with the big bags; collect it before the walk home in the dark.
