TL;DR

Chicago in February: 2°C / 36°F afternoons, −6°C / 21°F nights, and nine days of the Auto Show split between the halls and outdoor test drives.

Do
  • Long charcoal quilted down coat with a two-way zip. It covers your thighs on the walk from the train and opens from the hem when you sit behind a wheel
  • Cream fine-rib turtleneck under a heather-grey zip-up cardigan. The National Weather Service's cold advice starts with "dress in layers", and the zip opens on the show floor
  • Mid-wash straight-leg jeans. Denim takes a day of climbing in and out of cars on the indoor test tracks
  • Black waterproof leather hiker boots. You stand for hours in the halls, then cross slush on the walk out
  • Charcoal leather-palm gloves and a bottle-green ribbed beanie. The City of Chicago's January 2026 cold notice named a hat and gloves for going outside
  • Black leather bucket bag on the shoulder. The beanie and gloves drop into it indoors, and your hands stay free for car doors
Don't
  • A heavy wool overcoat on a show day. It hangs over your arm for hours, and a long down coat covers more of you for less weight
  • Heeled or thin-soled boots. McCormick Place lists 2.6 million square feet of exhibit halls, and snow lies on the ground on about 12 February days
  • Cotton socks inside your boots. The City of Chicago's 2026 cold notice warned that moisture damages the insulation in clothing
  • Driving in on a snow day. NWS Chicago's account of the 2011 blizzard records stranded vehicles on Lake Shore Drive

Dress for two climates in one day. NOAA's figures for O'Hare give February a 2°C / 36°F high, a night that falls to −6°C / 21°F, and an inch or more of snow on the ground on about 12 days. From 13 to 21 February the 2027 Chicago Auto Show fills McCormick Place's South and North buildings, and the Chicago Automobile Trade Association pairs "immersive indoor test tracks" with outdoor test drives. You walk the halls for hours, then spend minutes outside at the wheel. Pack a base layer, a mid-layer that unzips and a long down coat light enough to carry, and keep the gloves and beanie in your bag between cars.

The Auto Show is an indoor day with outdoor minutes in it. Dress for the minutes, then make every layer easy to take off and carry.

The capsule

  1. Long charcoal quilted down coat, hood, two-way zip
    01

You meet the cold in short, sharp stretches: the 0.15-mile walk from the Green Line's Cermak-McCormick Place station to the West Building, and the wait for an outdoor test drive. A below-the-knee down coat covers your thighs on a 2°C / 36°F afternoon, and the two-way zip opens from the hem when you sit behind a wheel. Folded over an arm indoors, down weighs little.

  2. Heather-grey zip-up cardigan with a ribbed stand collar, ribbed cuffs and slash pockets
    02

Once the coat comes off, this is your top layer. McCormick Place lists 2.6 million square feet of exhibit halls, and the Auto Show fills its South and North buildings, so you are indoors and on your feet for hours. Zip it down on the show floor and up to the ribbed collar before you head out. Two slash pockets hold a phone and ticket.

  3. Cream fine-rib wool turtleneck
    03
    Cream fine-rib wool turtleneck

Wear it as the first of three layers. The National Weather Service's cold-weather advice starts with "dress in layers", and a fine rib lies flat under the cardigan without bunching at the cuffs. The roll collar covers your neck between coat and beanie on the walk from the station, and cream lifts a capsule of charcoal, grey and denim under the show-floor lights.

  4. Mid-wash straight-leg jeans with turned-up cuffs and a small tear at the right knee
    04
    Mid-wash straight-leg jeans, turned-up cuffs

Denim stands up to a day of climbing in and out of cars: into passenger seats on the indoor test tracks, behind the wheel outside. A straight leg falls cleanly over a lace-up boot, and the turned-up cuff keeps the hem clear of slush on the roughly 12 February days when O'Hare has an inch or more of snow on the ground.

  5. Black waterproof leather hiker boots, lace-up, lug sole
    05

A show day means hours standing on hall floors, then a walk out over packed snow. These lace firmly around the ankle, with a padded collar and a cushioned midsole for the halls and a deep lug for the curb. Waterproof leather keeps your socks dry, which matters: the City of Chicago warned in January 2026 that moisture "can damage the insulation effectiveness of clothing."

  6. Black leather bucket bag with a single shoulder strap
    06
Black leather bucket bag, shoulder strap

Indoors, this is where your cold-weather pieces live. A deep leather bucket takes the beanie and both gloves when you come in from a test drive, so nothing falls out of a coat folded over your arm. Worn on the shoulder, it leaves both hands free for car doors, seat levers and steering wheels. Black matches the hiker boots and hides scuffs.

  7. Charcoal knit gloves with black leather palms

The Chicago Automobile Trade Association promises "outdoor test drive experiences", and the wheel of a car parked outside on a 2°C / 36°F day is cold in the hand. Leather palms grip it, and a stretchy merino knit back lets the gloves come off and go back on fast between cars. Keep them in the bucket bag indoors, dry for the next drive.

  8. Bottle-green ribbed wool beanie, folded cuff

McCormick Place sits on Chicago's lakefront, and the walk from the train or out to a test drive is when your ears are exposed. A deep folded cuff doubles the wool over them. The City of Chicago's January 2026 cold notice told anyone going out to "dress in several layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves." Bottle green keeps it apart from the charcoal coat and gloves when you fish it out of the bag between halls.

Day to night

Morning

Cream turtleneck · grey zip-up cardigan · mid-wash jeans · black hiker boots · charcoal down coat · bottle-green beanie · leather-palm gloves · black bucket bag. Metra Electric from Millennium Station to its stop inside the Grand Concourse in about seven minutes, then the South and North halls, with the outdoor test drives in the early afternoon: NOAA's hourly normal for O'Hare is just above freezing at 3pm.

Evening

Same layers, with the coat zipped and the beanie back on for the walk out. Mid-month the sun sets at 5:23pm, and NOAA's hourly normals for O'Hare go from −1°C / 30°F at 6pm to −2°C / 28°F at 9pm, on a night that falls to −6°C / 21°F. Metra Electric has you back at Millennium Station in about seven minutes.

What to avoid

  • A heavy wool overcoat. It hangs over your arm for hours on the show floor
  • Heeled or thin-soled boots. You stand for hours in the halls, then cross slush outside
  • Cotton socks. The City of Chicago warns that moisture weakens clothing's insulation
  • One bulky sweater as your only layer. It can't open when you come indoors
  • Driving in on a snow day. The 2011 blizzard left vehicles stranded on Lake Shore Drive

Frequently asked questions

Near freezing by day, well below it at night, and lighter every week. NOAA's figures for O'Hare give an average February high of 35.7°F (2.1°C) and a low of −5.7°C, with 1.97 inches of precipitation across about 9 days, 4.7 of them above a tenth of an inch. Snowfall averages 10.7 inches, and snow lies an inch or deeper on about 12 days. The high stays at or below freezing on 11.2 days, the low drops to freezing or below on 24.4 nights, and to 0°F or below on 1.8. Sunrise moves from 7:03am on 1 February to 6:27am on the 28th and sunset from 5:05pm to 5:39pm, so daylight grows from 10h 02m to 11h 12m.

A long charcoal quilted down coat with a two-way zip, a heather-grey zip-up cardigan, a cream fine-rib wool turtleneck, mid-wash straight-leg jeans, black waterproof leather hiker boots, a black leather bucket bag, charcoal knit gloves with leather palms and a bottle-green ribbed wool beanie. That covers a 2°C / 36°F afternoon at an outdoor test drive, a day on your feet inside McCormick Place and a night that falls to −6°C / 21°F. Leave the heavy wool overcoat, heeled boots and cotton socks at home.

Dress for a long day indoors with spells outside. The Chicago Automobile Trade Association, which produces the show, says "The 2027 Chicago Auto Show will be held Feb. 13-21 at McCormick Place in Chicago", and McCormick Place lists it in its South and North buildings. CATA adds: "Whether riding as a passenger indoors or taking the wheel outside, visitors can explore everything from off-road capability to electric and gas-powered performance." So wear a turtleneck and a zip-up cardigan for the halls, jeans for getting in and out of cars and cushioned lace-up boots, and keep the down coat, leather-palm gloves and beanie for the drives outside. Metra Electric stops inside the Grand Concourse, about seven minutes from Millennium Station downtown. CATA points visitors to ChicagoAutoShow.com for more information; check hours and tickets there before you go.

Late February for the Auto Show and milder days; early February if you want Lunar New Year and don't mind deeper snow cover. NWS Chicago's daily normals start the month at 32.0°F by day and 18.5°F at night and end it at 40.5°F and 26.1°F, and NOAA's daily normals put an inch of snow on the ground in 51% of years on 1 February against 31% on the 28th. Early February can bury the city: the 2011 blizzard put 21.2 inches on O'Hare, which NWS Chicago says "made this Chicago's biggest snowstorm ever in the month of February", with 13.6 inches on 1 February alone. Lunar New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, the Year of the Goat. From the 13th the Auto Show runs for nine days, Chinatown's Lunar New Year parade starts at 1pm on Sunday 14 February at 24th Street and Wentworth Avenue, and Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day) follows on Monday 15 February. McCormick Place also hosts trade events on 6–10 and 25–27 February, so check hotel rates near the campus for those dates. Maggie Daley Park releases skating-ribbon tickets for 15–28 February at noon on Monday 1 February.

February runs about 2°C milder, day and night, with more daylight and fewer days of snow cover. NOAA's O'Hare figures put January at 31.6°F (−0.2°C) by day and 18.8°F (−7.3°C) at night, against February's 35.7°F and −5.7°C. January stays colder and brings more snow, 11.3 inches to February's 10.7, with an inch or more on the ground on about 16 days against 12. Days with precipitation fall from 11.0 to 9.4, nights at or below 0°F from 3.5 to 1.8, and daylight on the 15th grows from 9h 29m to 10h 37m. Both months freeze most nights: February's low reaches freezing or below on 24.4 of them.

Chicagoans dress for the walk between doors: a long coat, a hat over the ears, boots with a grip sole, and layers that come off inside. The city has dressed shoppers for a long time. Marshall Field, Milton Palmer and Levi Leiter formed their partnership in 1865, the block at State and Washington housed Field stores from 1868, and Daniel H. Burnham's store there was completed in 1907, the year Louis Comfort Tiffany's glass-mosaic dome was unveiled. The National Park Service's landmark nomination quotes marketing expert James L. Palmer: Field "probably had as much to do with the development of the customer service concept of retailing as any merchant in America." The Chicago History Museum holds more than 50,000 pieces of dress and textiles from the eighteenth century on, "one of the nation’s premier clothing and fashion collections", alongside fashion sketches by Antonio Lopez.
