TL;DR

Istanbul in January: 9°C / 48°F days, 3°C / 37°F nights, the coldest month, and two winds, the poyraz and the lodos.

Do
  • Chocolate wool duffle coat with a hood — dense wool stops a north-easterly on the water, and toggles close with gloves on
  • Charcoal ribbed beanie — stays on in a gust that pushes a hood back
  • Chocolate lined leather gloves — leather blocks the wind that cuts through knit
  • Mustard wool scarf — wound twice, it seals the open neck of a duffle
  • Dark brown waterproof lace-up boots with a lug sole — rain on about 15 days and frost on about 6 nights
  • Black water-resistant crossbody — room for the clean underwear and moisturiser Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı recommends you bring
Don't
  • The Grand Bazaar on a Sunday — closed on 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 January
  • A cheap folding umbrella on a lodos day — gusts MGM puts at up to 40–60 knots turn it inside out
  • Pale trousers — road splash shows on about 15 wet days
  • Arriving late for a hamam — Kılıç Ali Paşa cancels a booking 20 minutes after its time

Dress for wind on the water. NOAA's 30-year record for Atatürk gives January 9.0°C by day and 3.3°C at night, with rain on about 15 days and frost on about 6 nights, and MGM's long Istanbul record makes it the coldest month and the one with the most rain days. Two winds decide each day. MGM defines the poyraz as a cold north-easterly that can blow hard enough to do damage on the Istanbul Bosphorus and brings snow to the northern coasts in winter; the lodos is a warm south-westerly whose gusts reach 40 to 60 knots. Pack a wool coat that closes to the chin, a hat that stays on, leather gloves and boots that grip.

January in Istanbul is a month of two winds. The poyraz brings the cold down the Bosphorus, the lodos brings warm rain on hard gusts, and the coat that matters is the one that toggles shut to the chin.

The capsule

  1. chocolate hooded wool duffle coat
    01
Chocolate wool duffle coat with a hood, horn toggles, to the knee

MGM describes the poyraz as a cold north-easterly that can do damage on the Istanbul Bosphorus, so your coat has to stop wind on a ferry deck. Heavy duffle wool does that, toggles fasten with gloves on, and the hood takes the light rain of most wet days: only about 7 of January's 15 bring 2.5 mm or more. Chocolate hides the road splash.

  2. cream fine-rib wool turtleneck
    02
    Cream fine-rib merino turtleneck

A turtleneck closes the gap a duffle leaves at the throat, which is where a north-easterly finds its way in on the water. Fine merino is warm on a morning near the 3°C / 37°F low and thin enough to pull off in one move at the hamam changing room. Cream sits high under the chocolate coat, clear of the splash.

  3. charcoal straight flannel trousers
    03
    Charcoal wool flannel straight trousers

Rain falls on about 15 January days at Atatürk, and MGM counts January as Istanbul's month with the most rain days, so pale trousers come home splashed. Charcoal flannel hides it, holds warmth through a day that peaks at 9°C / 48°F, and dries overnight on a hotel radiator. A straight, full-length leg sits over lace-up boots without bunching.

  4. pair of dark brown leather brogue lace-up lug boots
    04
Dark brown waterproof leather lace-up boots, lug sole

NOAA's Atatürk record has frost on about 6 January nights, a little more often after the 15th, and MGM's lowest January reading for Istanbul is −6.8°C, on 28 January 1969. A deep lug grips a wet or frosted morning pavement, and waterproof leather keeps your feet dry through the light rain of most wet days. Laces hold the ankle firm on a wet ferry gangway.

  5. mustard marled wool scarf
    05
    Mustard marled wool scarf

Wound twice under the duffle's hood, a long wool scarf seals your neck against a poyraz on the water and unwinds in one pull when you step into a heated shop at Beymen Tersane. Mustard is the one bright note in a capsule of chocolate, charcoal and cream, and on a grey, wet day it is the colour that shows up in a photograph.

  6. charcoal fine rib watch cap
    06
    Charcoal ribbed wool beanie

A hood is enough for rain, but a north-easterly on the water pushes it straight off your head. A close-fitting ribbed beanie stays on, and it keeps you warm on a night that falls to 3°C / 37°F. Under the Grand Bazaar's roofs it folds into a coat pocket.

  7. chocolate lined leather gloves
    07
    Chocolate lined leather gloves

Leather blocks the wind that cuts through knit, and a wool lining holds warmth on the frost mornings, about 6 of them in January at Atatürk. Duffle toggles and a tram card both work with the gloves on. Chocolate matches the coat, and a short cuff tucks under the sleeve so nothing gapes while you hold a ferry rail in a north-easterly.

  8. black nylon zip crossbody
    08
    Black water-resistant nylon zip crossbody

A January day here ends at a hamam, and Kılıç Ali Paşa's advice is short: "We recommend bringing clean underwear and moisturiser." Towels and the peshtemal wrap are provided, so a small water-resistant crossbody carries everything else, plus a phone and a card. Worn in front, it answers the UK Foreign Office's warning about pickpocketing in Istanbul's major tourist areas.

Day to night

Morning

Cream turtleneck · charcoal flannel · duffle toggled to the chin · mustard scarf · charcoal beanie · chocolate gloves · dark brown lug boots · black crossbody in front. The Grand Bazaar when it opens at 8:30am, any day but Sunday, then along the Golden Horn to Beymen Tersane, opened in 2025 inside what Beymen calls the 600-year-old Ottoman shipyard.

Evening

Coat open indoors, toggled again outside, hood up if the lodos brings rain. A hamam before dinner: Kılıç Ali Paşa in Tophane, built by Mimar Sinan in 1578–1580, where the whole bath takes one and a half to two hours, or Çemberlitaş, completed in 1584 and open until midnight. Sunset is 5:46pm on 1 January and 6:19pm on the 31st, ahead of a night that falls to 3°C / 37°F.

A suggested look — chocolate wool duffle coat, mustard wool scarf, cream ribbed merino turtleneck, charcoal ribbed wool beanie, chocolate leather gloves.

What to avoid

  • The Grand Bazaar on a Sunday — closed on 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 January
  • A cheap folding umbrella — lodos gusts reach 40 to 60 knots
  • Pale trousers — road splash on about 15 wet days
  • A late hamam arrival — Kılıç Ali Paşa cancels a booking after 20 minutes
  • An open tote in the bazaar — pickpocketing is common in tourist areas

Frequently asked questions

Cold, wet and windy: the coldest month of the year, by a narrow margin. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Istanbul Atatürk, the airport station the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) operates, gives a January high of 9.0°C / 48°F and a low of 3.3°C, about 69 mm of rain on roughly 15 days, about 7 days with 2.5 mm or more, and frost on about 6 nights. MGM's 1950–2025 Istanbul record puts January's mean at 6.8°C, a tenth of a degree under February, gives it the most rain days of any month, 16.27, and records January's lowest reading, −6.8°C, on 28 January 1969. Daylight runs from 8:29am to 5:46pm on 1 January and from 8:16am to 6:19pm on the 31st.

A chocolate wool duffle coat with a hood, a cream merino turtleneck, charcoal wool flannel trousers, dark brown waterproof lace-up boots with a lug sole, a mustard wool scarf, a charcoal ribbed beanie, chocolate lined leather gloves and a black water-resistant crossbody. That covers a 9°C / 48°F afternoon, a night that falls to 3°C / 37°F, rain on about 15 days and a north-easterly on a ferry deck. Leave the pale trousers and the cheap umbrella at home.

Istanbul's two winter winds, as MGM, the Turkish State Meteorological Service, defines them. The poyraz is a "Kuzeydoğudan esen" wind, blowing from the north-east: cold, and strong enough to do damage on the Black Sea's north-east-facing coasts and on the Istanbul Bosphorus, and in winter it brings snow to Türkiye's northern coasts. The lodos is a "güney batı yönlerden esen sıcak rüzgar", a warm wind from the south-west, whose speed and gusts sometimes reach 40 to 60 knots; MGM adds that it at times affects sea transport in the Aegean, the Marmara and the western Mediterranean. Dress for both winds: a coat that closes to the chin, a hat that stays on, and nothing that depends on an umbrella.

Late January, for the light; the weather barely shifts. On NOAA's Atatürk record the wet days split evenly across the month, and frost is only a little more frequent after the 15th, on about 22% of nights against 19% before it. Sunset moves from 5:46pm on the 1st to 6:19pm on the 31st. Early January has the one holiday: 1 January 2027 is a Friday and a public holiday, so Sultanahmet admits visitors only from 2:30pm. The Grand Bazaar's closed Sundays fall evenly through the month, on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.

Colder, as wet, and windier. NOAA's Atatürk record gives January 9.0°C / 48°F by day and 3.3°C at night, with about 15 wet days and 6 frost nights, against December's 11.0°C / 52°F, 5.3°C, about 15 wet days and 3 frost nights. December is the month of rain and mosque doors, so our December guide is built on a waterproof hood, pull-on boots for the shoe rack and a scarf big enough for your hair. January's cold comes on the wind, so this guide swaps in a hooded wool duffle, a beanie, lined leather gloves and lug-sole lace-ups.

Dark wool, a long scarf and boots that grip a wet pavement; in January the city shops and warms up under old roofs. The Grand Bazaar's foundation was laid in 1461 under Mehmed II, and it still covers 45,000 square metres with 3,600 shops. Beymen, which opened its first store in Şişli in 1971, put its largest investment to date into Beymen Tersane in 2025, set in what Beymen calls the 600-year-old Ottoman shipyard on the Golden Horn and billed as "Türkiye’nin en büyük moda mağazası", Türkiye's largest fashion store. And at the hamam you dress in the peshtemal wrap that Kılıç Ali Paşa provides: Mimar Sinan built Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı "to serve the mariners of Tophane", and Çemberlitaş Hamamı was "completed in 992/1584 according to its inscription".
