TL;DR

London in February: 9°C / 48°F afternoons, 3°C / 37°F nights, rain on about 10 days, and England at home to France and Italy at Twickenham.

Do
  • Olive waxed-cotton jacket with a front zip — you open outer jackets at the stadium search, and the wax sheds a shower
  • Oatmeal cable-knit wool crew — two hours in a seat at 9°C / 48°F, and the Met Office says moving air takes heat faster
  • Cream merino base layer — there is no re-entry, so every layer goes on before the gates
  • Navy tailored wool trousers — the France match falls on Valentine's Day, and a pressed crease goes straight on to dinner
  • Dark brown lace-up boots on a ridged sole — the stadium itself calls the upper tier's rake steep
  • Olive waxed zip crossbody, A4 or smaller — Allianz Stadium can refuse entry to a bigger bag
Don't
  • A backpack — bigger than A4, and the stadium can refuse you entry without a refund
  • A pullover smock — you open outer jackets at the search, and a smock comes off over your head
  • Cash for the bars — every bar and catering unit takes card only
  • Leaving a warm layer at the hotel — once you are in, there is no re-entry

Dress once, for the whole match day. The Met Office's Heathrow record puts February at 9.0°C / 48°F by day and 2.7°C / 37°F at night, and a Six Nations match day is spent mostly outdoors, two hours of it in a seat. The Met Office's advice is plain: "Windy days may need extra layers, even if temperatures look reasonable". Allianz Stadium adds its own terms: bags no bigger than A4, outer jackets opened at the search, card-only bars and no re-entry, so whatever you walk in wearing stays on until the final whistle. Pack a waxed jacket that zips, merino and wool under it, a scarf, gloves and a crossbody sized to the rule.

At Twickenham the stadium writes the dress code: a bag no bigger than A4, a jacket you open at the search, and whatever you walked in wearing until the final whistle.

The capsule

  1. Olive waxed-cotton field jacket with brown corduroy collar, front zip and snap placket

Open it at the turnstile. Allianz Stadium's security page asks you to "Open any outer jackets and bags (smaller than A4) and remove large items", so a front zip under a press-stud storm flap beats a smock you pull over your head. Waxed cotton sheds a shower on the 10-minute walk from Twickenham station, and the corduroy collar turns up against the wind.

  2. Oatmeal cable-knit wool crew neck
    02
    Oatmeal cable-knit wool crew neck

Two halves in a seat need wool. The Met Office warns that "Moving air removes heat from the body more quickly than still air, making it harder to stay warm", and on a match day you sit in that air for two hours. A cable-knit crew traps warmth under the jacket at 9°C / 48°F, and oatmeal sits between olive and navy without fighting either.

  3. Cream merino wool long-sleeve base layer with a crew neck
    03
    Cream merino long-sleeve base layer

Put every layer on before the gates. Allianz Stadium allows one entry per event day, so a layer left at the hotel stays there until full time. A fine merino long-sleeve under the knit adds warmth without bulk under a zipped jacket, and it breathes on a packed train back to Waterloo. Cream disappears at the neck of an oatmeal crew.

  4. Navy Tailored Trousers
    04
Navy tailored wool trousers, pressed crease

Wool keeps its warmth when damp, which denim does not, and NOAA's Heathrow record counts rain on about 10 February days. Navy trousers that stop at the ankle clear the boot laces and the grime of a full train from Waterloo, and a pressed crease walks from the stand to a dinner table in Richmond when the final whistle goes.

  5. Dark brown leather lace-up boots, ridged rubber sole
    05

Grip beats polish on match day. The stadium's FAQs warn that "the rake of the seats in the upper tier is steep and some people may find this unnerving", and if your seat is up there you climb those steps twice. A ridged rubber sole grips concrete after a shower, laces hold your heel on the climb, and dark brown hides concourse scuffs.

  6. Olive waxed-cotton zip crossbody
    06

Size it to the rule. The stadium asks for a bag no bigger than A4 and warns: "If you bring a bigger bag, this may result in you being denied entry without refund or compensation." An olive waxed-cotton crossbody with a zip top holds a phone, a card for the card-only bars and a train ticket, opens fast at the search and matches the jacket.

  7. Rust lambswool scarf
    07
    Rust lambswool scarf

Your face is the part the Met Office uses to measure wind chill: its figure calculates "how much heat is lost from a person's bare face at a walking speed of 3mph". A long lambswool scarf wound twice closes the jacket's collar and lifts over your chin when the second half turns gusty. Rust is the one bright note against olive, navy and oatmeal.

  8. Dark brown leather gloves, short cuff, lined
    08
Dark brown lined leather gloves, snap cuff

Your hands sit in your lap for two halves, and for the Italy match the second half runs after sunset, which comes at 5:25pm at Twickenham on 20 February. Lined dark brown leather gloves keep them warm as the night falls toward 3°C / 37°F, stay thin enough to tap a card, and snap shut at the cuff over the jacket sleeve.

Day to night

Morning

Cream merino base layer · oatmeal cable crew · navy tailored trousers · dark brown lace-up boots · olive waxed jacket, unzipped for the search · olive crossbody. England v France on Sunday 14 February: the train to Twickenham, the 10-minute walk from the station, a 3:10pm kick-off and full time close to sunset at 5:14pm.

Evening

Same base layer, knit, trousers and boots · olive waxed jacket zipped to the corduroy collar · rust scarf wound twice · dark brown leather gloves on. England v Italy on Saturday 20 February: a 4:40pm kick-off, sunset at 5:25pm, a second half after dark, then a night that falls toward 3°C / 37°F on the walk back to the station.

A suggested look — olive waxed-cotton jacket, oatmeal cable-knit wool sweater, navy tailored trousers, dark brown leather lace-up boots, rust lambswool scarf.

What to avoid

  • A backpack — the stadium asks for A4 or smaller and can refuse a bigger bag entry
  • A pullover smock — the search asks you to open outer jackets
  • A layer left at the hotel — there is no re-entry on an event day
  • Cash — the stadium's bars and catering units take card only
  • Suede — rain on about 10 February days on NOAA's Heathrow count

Frequently asked questions

Cool and gaining light fast. The Met Office's historic record for Heathrow averages 30 Februaries at 9.0°C / 48°F by day and 2.7°C / 37°F at night, with air frost on about 6 nights and 45mm of rain. NOAA's daily record for the same station counts about 10 days of 1mm or more, about 6 of them above 2.5mm. The sun shines about 2.7 hours a day. Daylight grows from 9h 10m on 1 February (sunrise 7:39am, sunset 4:49pm) to 10h 50m on the 28th (6:48am to 5:38pm).

An olive waxed-cotton jacket with a front zip, an oatmeal cable-knit wool crew, a cream merino base layer, navy tailored wool trousers, dark brown leather lace-up boots on a ridged sole, an olive waxed zip-top crossbody, a rust lambswool scarf and lined dark brown leather gloves. That covers a 3°C / 37°F morning, a 9°C / 48°F afternoon and two hours in a Twickenham seat. If you have a match ticket, keep the bag to A4 or smaller and carry a card, because the stadium's bars take card only.

Dress for the stadium's rules first. England play France at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on Sunday 14 February at 3:10pm and Italy on Saturday 20 February at 4:40pm, in a Championship the IRFU says "has been guaranteeing unpredictability since 1883". The stadium asks for bags no bigger than A4, searches all of them, asks you to open outer jackets at the search and allows one entry per event day. Its FAQs say "all bars and catering units accept card only", unless an event states otherwise. Allianz Stadium's guide for the England v Australia match on 8 November 2026 opens the gates three and a half hours before kick-off, so a full day in the cold starts early. Wear a zip jacket over wool, a scarf, gloves and boots that grip.

Mid-February for the rugby and Lunar New Year, late February for longer evenings. Chinatown London marks the Year of the Goat across the neighbourhood from 6 to 20 February 2027, and Shrove Tuesday falls on 9 February. England's two home matches come on 14 and 20 February, and half-term follows on 15 to 19 February in Croydon; other boroughs and academies set their own dates. Sunset moves from 4:49pm on the 1st to 5:38pm on the 28th, so the end of the month gives you nearly an hour more light after lunch.

January, by a little in the afternoons; the nights tie. On the Met Office's Heathrow record January averages 8.4°C by day against February's 9.0°C / 48°F, and both months average 2.7°C / 37°F at night. February is the drier and brighter of the two: 45mm of rain against 59mm, about 10 days of 1mm or more on NOAA's count against about 12, and 76 hours of sun against 59. Daylight on the 15th runs 10h 00m in February against 8h 21m in January. Pack the same wool for both; February adds the rugby as a reason to sit outside in it.

The British answer to a cold, wet afternoon outdoors is wool under waxed cotton, and both halves of it have dates. Barbour is a North East firm, not a London one: "The Barbour story began in 1894 in the Market Place in South Shields in the North East of England." Its Bedale and Beaufort wax jackets are still made by hand at its South Shields factory. The ground has its own record. The World Rugby Museum says the RFU bought the land in August 1907, a former market garden nicknamed "Billy Williams' cabbage patch", and the first match there, in October 1909, was played, in the RFU's words, "in tricky conditions after heavy rain over several days". Today Allianz Stadium, formerly Twickenham Stadium, seats 82,000.
