What to Wear in Kyoto in November

The month cools as it goes: JMA's ten-day normals slide from 19.5°C in the first third to 15.3°C in the last, and the nights from 10.2°C to 6.5°C. That matters because November is the month Kyoto stays open after dark. Eikandō's light-up runs from 20 November to 6 December with last entry at 8:30pm, and the sun sets near 4:50. The mornings start early too, with Tōfuku-ji opening its Tsūten-kyō bridge at 8:30am from 14 November. So pack one coat for the night, one cardigan for the day, and shoes you can step out of.
Kyoto in November keeps two opening times: half past eight for the gardens and half past five for the light-ups. Dress for the second one.

Grey rather than black, so the coat reads against dark temple wood instead of disappearing into it.
02Rust V-neck cardiganA November day in Kyoto is a run of thresholds: shoes off at the hall, on again for the garden, off at the next hall. A cardigan comes off with the shoes and goes back on in the unheated corridor, which a pullover does not. Rust, because it is the colour of the month on the persimmon trees and the maple edges, and it lets the grey coat and navy crew stay plain.
03Sage long-sleeve merino topWear it under the cardigan by day and under the crew by night. Fine merino keeps you warm on a cold temple floor and does not turn clammy on a packed city bus, and it is thin enough that the cardigan still buttons over it. Sage picks up the moss in the gardens at Tōfuku-ji and Nanzen-ji.

05Heather Donegal tweed trousers, straight legEvery hall expects covered knees, and in November the floor is the coldest thing you touch. Donegal tweed holds warmth that cotton chinos do not, its rust and moss flecks sit inside the garden palette, and a straight leg falls cleanly over a Chelsea boot instead of bunching when you kneel on tatami.
06Dark brown leather Chelsea bootsPull-on, not lace-up. You take your shoes off at every hall and at most restaurants, a dozen times on a full day, and elastic sides turn that into two seconds at a genkan. 07Moss-green wool stoleA stole does two jobs a scarf cannot. 08Tan canvas crossbody with leather trimKeep the bag small and in front of you. From 14 November the Tsūten-kyō bridge and the Higashiyama buses are at their fullest of the year, and a crossbody stays out of the next person's way where a backpack does not. Canvas with leather trim is a Kyoto tradition: Ichizawa, founded in Higashiyama in 1905, built its name on canvas bags for the city's carpenters, plasterers and milkmen.

Late November, if the leaves are the reason. JMA's specimen maple at the Kyoto station turns around 5 December in an average year, and it turned on 10 December in 2025, so the city's colour builds through the second half of the month. The light-ups and Tōfuku-ji's autumn season start in mid-November too. Early November is warmer, with JMA's first ten days averaging 19.5°C by day, and far quieter, but the gardens are mostly still green. Kyoto City publishes an autumn-leaves calendar each year; in 2025 it ran from 31 October to 12 December.
November runs about six degrees cooler at both ends of the day: JMA gives October 23.4°C and 14.4°C and November 17.3°C and 8.4°C, and the rain halves from 143mm to 74mm. The calendar changes as much as the thermometer: October has the Jidai Matsuri and the Kurama Fire Festival, November has the maples, the night openings and the crowds that come with them.
Layers that come off at a door. The November street in Kyoto is a wool coat over a knit or a cardigan, straight trousers or a long skirt that covers the knee on tatami, and shoes that come off without a struggle. Bags are small and often canvas: Ichizawa Shinzaburo Hanpu, whose family began sewing canvas in Higashiyama in 1905, still sells its bags there. For shoes with a local accent, the Kyoto label SOU・SOU makes the split-toe jika-tabi in printed cotton for everyday wear. Colour stays close to the gardens: grey, navy, moss, and one rust or persimmon piece.
